Donny Guerinoni's Role as a Coach of the Basketball Team

I like to follow the basketball team, but I am not as plugged in to how it actually runs from a coaching stand point. Every game, I notice Donny Guerinoni really take charge during timeouts as TJ is in the background in the huddle--involved but not the primary speaker for instance. Further, I will see he and TJ conference for the beginning of a timeout and that decision will be relayed to the team usually by Guerinoni.

Here's my question. Is Donny Guerinoni the primary strategy guy on the staff (even more so than Coach Johnson), the Tex Winter to his Phil Jackson, so to speak? This is not a swipe at TJ, though 90% of the comments that follow will likely make it that. I know Guerinoni has been with TJ for a while (and most of his career). Anyone notice that he seems to be x's and o's guy or can shed some light on how he and Coach Johnson interact and coach the team?

Good question and I have no idea.

im pretty sure he became trent's number 2 after richard left. not a big fan of his relative inexperience but he seems like a guy who could be on the rise.

other than that i think he works with the perimeter players (scott with the posts) not sure what nick robinson does.

wouldn't mind trent bringing in someone who can add some new ideas to the halfcourt.

To be honest I have no idea either, but just from what I've observed it seems like TJ is a hands off gameday coach, and allows his assistants to do a lot of the work on game day (nothing wrong with this imo). So you may very well be right.

I agree with the sentiment that it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I seem to recall that Brady did this a bit with Nikita Johnson, correct me if I'm wrong. Dale Brown's x and o's knowledge has also been debated endlessly. I'm wondering if Guerinoni's role is he's the D guy or the strategy guy or some other segment. Fascinating stuff.

That was mostly because the only thing Brady could say to his players on game day was, "frick, you guys are fricking playing like shite. Get your fricking heads on straight." Regardless of score.

(Yes, this is an actual quote from him from one of the games I sat with a friend of mine behind the LSU bench, we were up by 8 or so at the time).

My favorite JB memory was as Torris Bright is bringing the ball down after LSU allowed an easy drive and score(it was in the first half so Brady was on the defensive side of the court). As Torris passed Brady Brady yelled "Torris!" He slows and looks. Brady says, "what the frick are you doing out there?" Torris shrugged at him and went to run the offense*.

* NOTE the term offense is being used in a loose sense here, especially if the opposition was in a zone. It was more of a stand on the outside and pray in that situation.

I got derailed a bit and that is going to get me in trouble with some of the Brady posters who like to find slights on him and battle to the death. I seem to think xiv is one of the culprits, but I haven't seen a Brady thread-killer in a few years so I don't remember.

End

I figured there would be a bit more insight on Guerinoni's role. I guess I will keep an eye on him tonight and see if I notice the same things.

Treloar was brady's strategist not nikita. I think he is the gm for the suns now

DG probably is the primary opponent film-watcher.

Coach Guerinoni put in our new defensive system this year. He runs all the defensive stuff.
