Firstly, its not like it was a FG as time expired. Iowa St would have still had a very strong chance to respond. Secondly, Oklahoma St would have absolutely trashed LSU on January 9th.

You are a moron if you think just because Bama stopped our offense that OSU's shitty defense would have too. We would have skull drug the Cowboys.

Reality check. The program is bottom tier in the SEC with little fan support, except for some of the dorkiest students on campus. This team likely splits the remaining schedule and loses in the first round of the NIT.

I've been as hard on Trent as anyone the past few months but these last few wins prove we are actually improving. Our last 5 games are all winnable games. I would def be happy if we pulled off a 20 win season with this young team.

See January 9, 2012 at 7pm in the Superdome(Les is the greatest) and then January 9, 2012 at 10pm in the Superdome(Fire Les).

LSU will most definitely finish in the upper half of the SEC this season

That would mean top 6. We are tied for 8th right now. If we go 3-2 in the last 5 games, which is a reasonable expectation even though it would require winning a road SEC game which we haven't done all year, we'll finish 8-8. I don't know if that's "definitely" in the top half. Going better than 3-2 in the last 5 already takes us out of "definitely" territory regardless of where it would put us in the standings. LSU has a chance, but only a chance, to finish in the top half of the SEC, but it is far from assured, and the odds of doing so are probably no better than even, maybe worse than even.

has a chance to finish in the top 3rd.

To finish in the top 4 would require a sequence of events that would likely only happen if we could write the script. There are four teams in our way for a top 4 finish, and we only play two of them, so we would need to beat those teams (one is on the road) and get some help. A finish outside the top 3rd in the SEC is all but assured. Besides, assuming the SECT is seeded like a normal 12-team tournament, we don't want a #4 or #5 seed anyway, because then we'd have to play Kentucky in the semifinals, assuming we get that far. A #6 seed is much better than a #4 or #5 because we'd avoid Kentucky until the final, assuming we get that far.

That is not bottom tier.

No, that would be our SEC record over the last 20 years (12th out of 12). That's why everybody is going so crazy over MAYBE finishing .500 in the SEC and going to the NIT.

The bottom line is that, right now, there are three teams behind us, seven teams ahead of us, and one team tied with us in the SEC standings. Call it what you want, but a school with LSU's resources should never be pointing to a season like this, in any sport, as the big breakout improvement year after three years of rebuilding.

The interesting things to see over the next couple of years will be A) can we get to a point where we are one of the best two or three teams in the SEC, and B) can we avoid the freefall to 2-4 SEC wins the following year? If we can't do A, then we need to get rid of TJ. If we can do A (after four years of building) but not B, then we might as well have kept Brady. If we can do A and B, then we'll be making progress.

And again I'll bring up the point that we have played the following road games thus far:

@Arkansas
@Alabama
@Florida
@Mississippi State
@Vandy

All of those are pretty good teams. What we have left on the road is:

@South Carolina
@Ole Miss
@Auburn

Now, If I had shown you those 8 games prior to the SEC season starting, how would you rank them in terms of the likelihood that we would win them?

I'd almost guarantee that the three we have upcoming would be the top 3 in some order

Trent is an above average but not great coach. He and his staff have not shown that they can recruit enough good players to get us above the middle of the conference.

Or even TO the middle.

Next year we should have a better team even if we only sign Malik Morgan. They will be more experienced, hopefully O'Bryant and Hickey become better players. However our depth will suffer and we will really miss Storm

If next year isn't better, and significantly better at that, then that will be a very bad sign.

Trent and his staff need to do a better job recruiting or ultimately they will fail

Obviously. The question is, what are the prospects for improvement in this crucial area? Are there any more great players coming up in Louisiana? Or does that even matter, given our inability to sign them even when they do?

If we win out we will finish top 3. Vandy plays both UK, UF, and 4 other games. I think they will lose 3 games. We are only 1 game behind everyone else and they all play much tougher schedules. The big question is if we can win out.

I thought before the season Ole Miss was supposed to be better than Arkansas. Nevertheless, yes, I understand the toughest road games are behind us, but we haven't really shown any ability even to be competitive on the road, save for one game in Starkville when we shot unusually well from 3-pt range. Of course, the sad thing about unusually good shooting is that it's...unusual.

But do keep in mind that I did say going 3-2 in the last 5 games is a reasonable expectation, even though it requires winning a road SEC game. Beating anyone, even a bad SEC team, on the road would be breaking new ground for this team. But then so is winning 5 SEC games in one season, I guess.

We played pretty well at Arkansas and at Vandy as well, the scores may not show it as much, but both of those games were close games (we were within 4 of Vandy with under 4:00 to go).

Hell, if we win out the rest of the year, we'll be national champions. If we DON'T win out (getting back into the world of reality), we will not finish in the top 4 of the SEC.

Not really that big of a question.

It's all about winning and it should be. We play to win the game, right?. Fine line between W's and L's. It's always been that way. Why complain about it now?

Yes, but my hyperbole about the NC was intended to demonstrate that expecting a team that hasn't won a road SEC game this year suddenly to sweep three in a row is unrealistic. I can believe we'll win one (probably South Carolina) and maybe even two (add Auburn), but winning all three, plus winning both home games against improving Georgia and Tennessee just doesn't seem likely. Going 3-2 over the last five games seems like a reasonable expectation, and that won't get us anywhere near the top four in the SEC.

expecting it to happen may be unrealistic, but giving them virtually no chance is also unrealistic. This team is playing by far their best basketball of the season right now.

True, but individually all 5 games are games that you look at and say we have a decent shot. No kentuckys or at Vandys left. We beat Ole Miss badly at home, SC and AU are two of the worst teams in the SEC. Then home games against mediocre UT and UGA squads. I'm not saying it is a given that we win out those games, I'm saying we have a shot at it. It isn't all doom and gloom like you say it is.

I don't think so. I think if something (winning out) is unrealistic, then giving it virtually no chance is, by definition, not unrealistic. There are only two options, win out or don't win out. They can't both be unrealistic.

No better than they played in the stretch from Marquette through Ole Miss earlier in the season. From there, they lost five of the next seven. It's a young team, and improvement, if it happens at all, won't be linear and steady. It'll be two steps forward, one step backward, etc.
