I'm starting up a new fantasy baseball league with some friends this year. Looks like we've got about 10 interested with most of us having previous but limited fantasy baseball experience and two that are in multiple leagues every year.

I'm in charge of it so wanting some advice on what type of league you guys like the best. Standard vs. Auction draft, payout structure (regular season champs and playoffs or just playoffs). We'll be doing head to head scoring with at least the 10 default categories (5 pitching, 5 batting). Do you guys usually expand on that?

Any other advice you'd like to add is welcome.

Thanks,

I run a league, standard draft format is what i like better. Head to Head is the best for me because some teams can stay interested every week. 5 and 5 for catagories are good depending on the cats. what catagories are you using?

Avg, Runs, RBI, HR, SB, ERA, WHIP, Wins, Saves, Ks,

What do you think about the argument that a standard draft gives a statistical advantage based on draft order, where there is no advantage in an auction draft because every person has an equal chance? I know in football this is a big deal because of the drop off in the 6th best RB and the 7th best RB year to year so you can be at a major disadvantage with a late draft pick. Is baseball different in that respect?

It doesn't matter where you pick from in baseball or football. You could argue the back end of the draft order is better because you get a higher 2nd round pick. It all averages out. I have won leagues pick in the front, middle, and back.

My advice: DO NOT expand to more than 10 categories. Beyond 10 and you get into some real BS stats that will screw up good solid teams.

I'd pay awards on playoffs only.

Leaning towards 10 categories

Avg, R, RBI, HR, SB,
Wins (maybe quality starts?), Saves, Whip, ERA, Ks

I've heard people that think an auction draft for Baseball takes too long.

Looking at 2 divisions of 5, division winner + 2 wild cards make playoffs,

Min IP 25

Anything else I need to consider?

I played Quality Starts over Wins last year for the first time in 13 years and QS is much better and fairer. Your SP shouldn't be penalized if he plays for a bad offensive team or if a closer blows a save chance in his start. Too many other things affect pitching Wins.

The K's/9 just there to limit tanking ERA/WHIP for overall Ks?

So am I crazy to want to do an auction draft vs. normal? Are basically all fantasy baseball drafts normal?

I love auction drafts. They take longer, but see if your league is interested.
