and manages to keep the likes of Brees (pretty much a given here), Nicks, Colston, and signs a key FA or two, what will be your reaction and where does this put him amongst the top GMs in the game today and recent history? I believe he is already one of the more respected and highly touted GMs in the game.

(I expect to see the kermit jimp gif in 3...2...1...)

Brees, Nicks, & Colston would leave room for little else. Free agents maybe but not the type I would call key, more like budget free agents. Big name cuts to a Smith or Vilma might make some space but you're losing their production too.

If Nicks or Colston left- in whatever way it shook out- then there could be some cash to go after a higher profile free agent.

Loomis is well respected and fills his role well. He's not the personnel evaluator but the cap management and contract guru. I think he outlines and guides the plan. The coaches, Reiprish, & the rest of the staff fill in the blanks as to who fits in that plan.

Beyond the money/value specifics of Colston and Nicks there are factors we really dunno that will come into play....

-Are they ready for Tennant or a rookie C-G to start?

-Do they believe Arrington, Joe Morgan, or a rookie can step up significantly to defray some lost Colston production?

Yes to those and the push won't be nearly as hard to re-sign them. No and the players have more leverage.

get out of here with you realistic approach!

Let us live in our fantasy where Nicks, Colston, and Brees stay AND sign a key free agent.

Anyway I expect my reaction to range from

And you know this how? I highly doubt he sits is a room and waits for a wish list from the coaching staff before just hammering out some numbers. I'm pretty sure he is involved in some capacity as to the evaluation process and knows football and scouting to a degree.

quote:

He was awarded the NFL executive of the year for 2006. He attended Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon, where he played basketball. He earned his degree in accounting from the University of Oregon. Before coming to the Saints, Loomis spent 15 years in the Seattle Seahawk organization.

I agree with what you said though that his strong suit is money management, no player evaluation, but I do believe he is part of that process to some degree.

me said- he outlines and guides the plan. By that I meant he is the overseer. More than just a part, he is the boss. Check HIS BIO on the team website: The departments under his direction include coaching, player personnel and scouting, salary cap management, contract negotiations, athletic training, equipment, video and communications.

The clearest indication that the football guys are the heavy swingers in the player/talent decisions is how radically different the drafts have been since Payton arrived vs. the Haslett ones. Not only way much better but distinctly different types of players.

WTF is wrong with this? I'm a CPA and I manage money, but that doesn't mean that's all I can do.

On a seruous side:

Nothing is wrong with it. It takes a CFO and a CEO to run a company and sometimes their duties cross over. He prob doesnt just sit there until a "wishlist" come to his desk, but he damn sure takes a ton of advice on who to keep and for how much. But at the end of the day the decision is his. Im my mind, Loomis has already cemented himself as an amazing GM, one of the best ever. Of course I have Black and Gold Laser Vision, but he has done an amazing job with contracts both in keeping people here and keeping them affordable, while rewarding players that deserve it.

On a less serious side. Lets say we keep the big 3 and sign some big time free agents I'll go from six to midnight.

Lets say we get homefield in the playoffs next season:
