Replacing laptop HDD with SSD
Posted by ChroniX on 2/9/12 at 3:46 pm00
Ive been reading into it, and have decided to replace my current 500G Hard drive with a 256G or higher solid state drive. My understanding, is that as long as I buy a 2.5" drive, and clone my current one, it should be a simple swap.
Anyone else have any experience with this or know of a better deal on a ssd?
Newegg SSD for $400

i made the swap in mine a year ago, went from 2 250g hdd to 2 250g ssd.... i moved all files i wanted to my external, loaded a fresh copy of windows on the new drives and migrated over what i wanted from the old stuff..... they are in a raid configuration... best move of my life, my boot time is literally around 20 sec and windows is up

You better have less than 256 GB of data on that 500 GB drive.
I have about 12G free, going to have to delete a few things

This is what I want. Also want to load bf3 and a few other games that would benefit from the speed difference.

Games don't really matter. Might load faster, but that's about it.

I know. The gpu and my connection make the difference there; but im hoping that in certain cases, when a map has to be loaded etc, ill notice a difference.
does your laptop have multiple 2.5" bays?
If it does, I'd recommend buying a smaller SSD to save some money and just do a clean windows install.
Either way, I'd definitely recommend a clean install and then copy your important files over from the old hard drive.

all load screens will be a whole lot faster
correct, while in-game you wont notice a diffrence, but on patch days and installing new software its blazin'.... and thats not a bad price, what manufacturer is it?

The SSD is made by Crucial, and my laptop is a HP dv7.
This made me feel like a scrub for not knowing until now, but a few nights ago I un screwed the bottom to check out my Hard drive bay, and realized that I have an extra one.
So, ill probably get a 128G instead, clean install win7, load a few choice games, and set my current one up as storage.
Had to grab me one of these off amazon LINK
This, with the new addition of 16G of ram =
