OK, so I went fishing today with some friends. The place we fished (private stocked lake) offered up a bucket of flour to make your own dough balls with - people around us were killing it by mixing a little water in the bucket and making their bait right there, but we couldn't make the damn stuff stay on the hook. Any advice?

I've mixed up flour and fish meal to bait for shrimp, but never tried to get it to stick on a hook.

My advice would be go to wal marks and buy some blood bait, or get some night crawlers.

Take the spring out of a ball point pen thread it on the hook and make the dough ball around the spring. Is helps hold the dough on pretty good.

Good tip - they had these plastic coils just above the hook, but then you had to jam the hook back up into it, which put the hook at a weird angle.....

I should add for context that this was a lake in Thailand - no Wal Mart around to go buy worms or any additional stuff/bait.

The Thais were pulling these enormous (Mekong) catfish out, but we only caught one all day (around 15 lbs I'd guess, a baby compared to the others we saw....)

Was hoping someone had the technique down for what ratio to mix between water and flour (I think it may have been a cornmeal/flour mix or something.....) or something

Does better if you keep it really cold. And u can mix in a little vaseline to hold it together better and keep it from softening so much in the water. Crisco works good too.
Prefer chicken livers though.

Thanks! Will definitely try the vaseline or crisco idea next time.....

We'll probably bring our own bait (chicken livers or something) also, next time, but honestly, the dough balls were getting it done for everyone else there, so I'd like to make those work if I can.

I never did much catfishing growing up - always stuck to bass, crappie, etc, but around here it seems catfishing is the way to go, so I'm trying to figure it out....

biscuit dough works good too. And it's easier to deal with. Keep it as cold as possible n it'll be firmer and easier to work with.
