How does franchising Nicks this year effect the Saints' cap situation?

Would we be able to sign Brees and Colston if we franchised Nicks and let Meachem and Porter walk?

If Brees' and Colston's contracts were structured to reduce the cap hit early and escalate over a few years would we still be able to sign Graham and Nicks in 2013?

Cap experts I need help.

Probably not unless we do some serious restructure. Either new contracts for beefy guys on the cap or complete cuts.

Good candidates would be Ellis, Smith, Vilma right now. All big beefy contracts. I'd say Harper but I'm pretty sure we're stuck with his fat juicy contract for awhile.

Brees will be making at least 17$ million a year when he signs his deal.

I wouldn't have a problem letting Vilma go and probably Ellis. Dunbar has outperformed as of late. Although I hate feeling that Ellis will do well as soon as we let him go. I feel like the potential is there but he's really been such a no factor lately.

ideally you want new deals for them all for the best cap management. A franchise for Nicks will end up over $9mil.

The most prudent use of the tag would be if they decided they cannot afford Nicks long term. Tag him and negotiate a trade. As the best guard in the NFL I think plenty of teams would give up a mid 1st Rder for him.

One other option along those lines... If you like Nicks more than Evans (I do). Sign Nicks long term and trade Evans- contract already in place. More cap hit that way but keep the guy you want and the team traded to does not have to work out a contract.

According to this:
quote:

New Orleans’ salary-cap situation for 2012 isn’t quite as bad as early reports made it sound. League-wide cap figures had the Saints listed with about $106 million already committed toward the 2012 salary cap.

quote:

It turns out that number is about $12 million too high. That’s because the figure was including a charge of almost $12 million for quarterback Drew Brees. But 2012 was voided out of Brees’ contract, so the Saints are, for the moment, sitting at about $94 million.

quote:

it is likely Brees’ new deal will give him a cap figure somewhere around $15 million for 2012, unless the Saints really get creative in spreading out his money.

quote:

Still, that would only put the Saints up to around $109 million. That would leave them some room to re-sign some other key players and they have several

So with Nicks tagged at $9M a year that would put the Saints at $118M.. That's pretty rough.

there's been some pretty good threads discussing the cap situation already. Look up Yasinskas espn NFC South blog and at nola.com for a looks at the numbers too.

my take is-

Brees done for whatever long term, expect $15-17mil cap hit

Nicks is too valuable to let walk even if you cannot afford him. Do the deal or get a 1st Rd pick for Evans or him.

Colston I love but when considering age and both the frequency and number of injuries I wouldn't want to see them bust the bank. With the cost of a new deal you prolly could get a 2nd or 3rd Rder- if that much. The emergence of Graham as a big bodied target is also a factor to me when considering all the team needs.

$8.5m hit trading Evans. He won't get dealt since he's still a top 5 guard and his base salaries aren't horrible or anything. Actually just $3m base in 2012. Loomis obviously saw all the FAs we had this year when doing that, plus he had a really high base salary when he signed the deal in 2010, when there was no salary cap.

quote:

Tag him and negotiate a trade.

Is what I think happens if we sign Brees in time (I have no idea what the first day is that they can extend him vs. when the franchise tag deadline is, last year it was Feb 24 but last year was fricked up). Nicks has a lot more value than Colston given this season will have one of the best WR FA classes in memory.

I have a feeling we can keep one or the other between Nicks and Colston. Fingers crossed that it's Nicks, but I think Brees will lobby for Colston. I would still let him hit FA as we did with Vilma. I suspect if we do franchise/deal Nicks, we'd get a pick anywhere from 19-40. Tough to tell for sure. Chicago (picking 19) and Pitt (24) have to be getting pissed off by now by their OLs and would have to give it a long thought. Cleveland could give up their Atlanta pick in the 20's for someone like Nicks to help them out against those three very good defenses in the AFCN.

The article linked is from the. NFC south blog. Unfortunately, without restructuring creatively I don't see a way to get our cap figure below $115 with Brees and Nicks signed. How many million over $120 can we go with the new CBA. Isn't there a 1 year excretion clause or is that only for the season that is about to be completed?

I don't have the time to look into the specifics that I've forgotten, but there was a way to ease teams from the 2010 no cap to the 2011 cap by giving teams some leeway. Put simply, we may be able to go $4-6m over the cap. I'll look more into it tomorrow.

And cutting Smith or Vilma could save us some cash.

Personally, I would let Colston walk and franchise + trade Nicks. We've been beasts at drafting guards, so go after Nicks's replacement in the draft (whether it be with our first pick or a mid rounder) and focus HEAVILY on the front 7 in the draft. There are plenty of reasonably priced WRs to replace Colston, plus guys like Steve Smith and Braylon Edwards that would love to play with Brees for one year and get their final big contract in 2013.

that's right about it on the CBA. There will be plenty of fresh articles about that coming soon. I think it's around the start of Feb. that the cap number and all the franchise numbers are established.

I don't think they let Vilma go this year- just as the defensive play caller-leader. Doubt a restructure either. After this year though it will get to crunch time with him.

I could see a restructure or we cut ya for Smith. He's only gonna age and slow more from this point. Robert Mathis for the same money of Smith cut savings is my suggestion.

Sedrick Ellis- ugh, he hurts. $4.3mil the last yr of his rookie contract. Really came on in '10 and looked ready to step it up. Then last year quite a few steps back. Unless there was some undisclosed injury that impeded him I wouldn't be upset if he was cut. $4.3mil could pay Rogers AND Franklin.

This is actually an option I've never thought of, but I like it. If we have to let one of our guards go better evans than nicks.

This may help with the math: 2011 Player Salaries

Not a complete list though.
