Trey Granier LB 6-0 225 Fr. HS Thibodaux, La. (Thibodaux HS)
Ronnie Feist LB 6-1 225 Fr. HS Edgard, La. (West St. John HS)
Kwon Alexander LB 6-2 220 Fr. HS Oxford, Ala. (Oxford HS)
Lorenzo Phillips LB 6-2 200 Fr. HS Patterson, La. (Patterson HS)
Deion Jones LB 6-2 200 Fr. HS New Orleans, La. (Jesuit HS)
Lamar Louis ATH 5-11 220 Fr. HS Breaux Bridge, La. (Breaux Bridge HS)

I'm thinking Granier(MLB) gets a red-shirt, Alexander(OLB) and Feist(MLB) gets rotated in the 2 deep LB corps, Phillips(OLB) and Jones(OLB) getting in on mostly special teams, and Louis(LB/RB) getting a look at RB during spring practice. If Alexander doesn't look fully healed, he would get red-shirted along with Granier.

2011 Underclassmen LB Roster:

51 Trevon Randle LB 6-1 210 Fr. HS League City, Texas (Clear Springs HS) GONE?
Edwin Johnson LB 6-0 219 Jr. RS Baton Rouge, La. (Woodlawn HS/Grambling)
31 D.J. Welter LB 6-0 226 Fr. RS Crowley, La. (Notre Dame HS)
39 Josh Johns LB 6-2 206 So. SQ Baton Rouge, La. (Central HS)
46 Kevin Minter LB 6-2 242 So. 1L Suwanee, Ga. (Peachtree Ridge HS)
55 Jarrett Hardnett LB 6-1 235 So. SQ Baton Rouge, La. (Woodlawn HS/Northwestern St.)
52 Luke Muncie LB 6-3 220 So. 1L Klein, Texas (Oak HS)
48 Seth Fruge LB 5-11 200 So. 1L Welsh, La. (Notre Dame HS)
57 Lamin Barrow LB 6-2 229 So. 1L Marrero, La. (John Ehret HS)
58 Tahj Jones LB 6-2 205 So. 1L Sulphur, La. (Sulphur HS)
Grant Leger LB 6-1 215 Fr. HS Metairie, La. (Jesuit HS)

No way they put Lewis at RB, he will be the best LB out of the 6. He will be in the 2 deeps next season and maybe even start before seasons end.

You think any of them might be moved to DE as a pass rusher, like Mingo?

Trevon Randle transferred to Houston.

I think your starters are probably Minter, Jones, and Barrow.

The question is, which of those guys does the staff feel are more prepared to contribute than Welter, Johns, and Muncie?

My best guess is: Granier, Alexander (potentially, due to injury), and Jones redshirt. Feist and Louis play because they were early enrollees. I think Phillips plays because Chavis loves him in the OLB position. Just my best guess.

Attrition, transfers, grades, under performance, will happen to some along with a position change for at least 1

The one guy whom I thought would drop down to a 3-point stance defected to Texas.

Although I don't think it will happen, the two most likely to change position are Feist (who played DE in high school) and Louis, who played a good bit of RB at Breaux Bridge. I think Mascona conjectured that Louis could turn into a helluva FB.

But to be honest most of these guys look like LBs. I think the best chance someone had to change positions was Torshiro Davis, and that's part of the reason he went to Texas. I think it puts LSU in a great position because, depending on how many you redshirt this year, you may not even need to recruit an LB for 2013.

I was thinking the same thing about a position change. The only one I can think of getting moved rather easily and still contribute big time is Lamar Louis. From watching some of his film, he looks more than capable toting the rock. He's just a freak athlete with or without the ball in his hands. I assume Jeremy Hill will get alot of work at fullback to start off his career.

I hope we do. The next LB class isn't supposed to be a very big drop-off from this class. I think one of the top in-state LB prospects is already the same size as Devall but two inches taller.

None of our defense was ever a concern. We just fielded the best defense in LSU history last year.

Phillips or Kwon will be starting by the 3rd game. I think that Feist will also get playing time. Granier and Louis wind up red shirting. If Kwon Alexander isn't fully recovered then he redshirts instead of Louis.

If Kevin Minter gains any more weight, he's got to move to DE - other than that, we have far more S/LB hybrids than guys at risk of growing out of the LB position. However, this is Chavis' signature on the position - it is similar to what Florida State did in the 90s where they had, at one time, 55 out of 85 scholarship players who ran the 40 in 4.5 or better (Yes that means virtually all the QBs, TEs and pretty much everbody other than the OL and DTs had to run it that fast - I didn't time them, but that was what was being put out there).

Speed kills.
