anyone here ever caught a skunk, tips needed

About a month ago my dog was cutting up at the edge of the woods one night. I went to see what the problem was and she had found a big arse skunk. When I saw it, I told my daughter to go get my pistol beside the bed. Here I am, about 15 feet away, staring at this SOB, waiting for her to come back. Mins seemed like hours, as I wonder if she had went to Academy to get the pistol. 
All the while the skunk was just rutting around in the pine straw without a worry in the world. I could have shot that SOB a hundred times. When daughter finally made it back outside, skunk had slowly made his way in to a thicket. I couldnt just barrel of in there to find him, so I hung out about 45 mins throwing sticks in there to try to flush him out. Well I never saw him again.
About a week later, I found a chicken dead in our chicken pen with only her head missing. I knew the damn skunk got her. When I picked her up to chunk her she smelt like skunk. For the next 5 nights the dog and I patrolled the yard w/o any luck. Two nights later the chicken killer showed up again, and killed another hen.
I got a live box trap and have had it set up now for the last 5 nights. I havent caught nothing yet. For the last week I have had the chickens locked up safe in their coop at night, so I dont know if it has returned yet or not.
I googled what to bait it with and I decided to go with peanut butter on a slice of bread. I didnt want to use anything else at the time (working nights and cant monitor trap) because I didnt want to catch a stray cat and then the skunk show up and I miss a chance at him again.
Long story short, has anyone here ever had any luck catching a skunk, and what kind of bait did you use? After tonight I'm off for 7 days and I'm going balls to the wall to rid myself of this problem, before my dog get sprayed.

My friend caught one when I was a kid. If a remember correctly, he used sardines. It was a spotted skunk though, not a striped one.

Not sure what bait. But a friend used to catch them, drag a tarp over the trap, attach pipe to tailpipe of truck and put under tarp. Kills them without them spraying. And does it fairly quick.
Just don't use a diesel tractor or truck. He tried that and it wasn't as quick.

I read on the webz that the best way to kill them was to drown them. I have the trap draped with a blanket to keep from getting sprayed, and i have a rope tied to the trap. Im planing on throwing him in the pond to drown him. They dont recommend relocating them due to the rabies issue. If all else falls, I may need to borrow a Judge and deliver one to his face

They will spray a little when moved. The tailpipe trick gets them in minutes.
Sardines may be what he used. I'll have to ask him when he gets back in town.

A fresh egg works I wouldn't think they could smell it but my neighbor had the same problem plus one evening he didn't gather his eggs and they ate them. He used eggs in his live trap and caught skunks, coons and possums.
ETA 12 gauge prevents spraying so judge may work.

How close do you live to a body of water. A mink is much more likely to remove just the head of its prey than a skunk.
As far as killing a skunk, it all depends on what type of area/neighborhood you live in.
Look for these type of places as skunk habitat in urban areas: a rundown building, a pile of trash, a building with a bottom floor that has outside access, an isolated brusy area, or a culvert that is isolated that doesnt normally get water in it.
As far as bait, think about using freshly sifted dirt, and a commercial lure that has a lot of skunk essence.

I have a small pond about 100 yards from the chicken pen and that is where I first saw the skunk.
mink is the direction I would have went in first, but I saw the skunk 5 nights before first chicken got killed. When I removed the dead chicken they both smelled like a skunk.
