I definitely trust the FO to make the right decision and I think most fans will be happy with just about any pick that addresses the defensive front.

I have been wondering how much input Spags will have in the process, though. Does anyone know if he's a BPA guy or if he looks for needs first?

The coordinators prolly whine for all the immediate talent they can get on their side of the ball- both free agency and draft. That's where the weight of the HC & GM come in to balance the needs list.

BPA/development doesn't have to mean 3-4 years necessarily. Graham again a great example. Raw, talented, but not ready to step up to the NFL full plate in year one. Year two, voila. NYG Pierre-Paul is the exact same type example on the defensive side.

Defense front seven definitely at the top of the list now. Colston or Nicks departing would be of great weight in that tho.

I guess with no 1st Rd pick I'm gonna have to work harder to get any mock interest this year

Tez Wilson-Vilma with Dunbar behind him- with David or Lewis starting on the WLB side. Oui? I'll take it.

one mo hard bump for the posters in the Combine thread

Bunting at NFP put Lewis, Chapman & Irvin in his All Underrated List of D players today HERE

OLB Travis Lewis: Oklahoma (6-2, 227)
He's a bit undersized and doesn't tackle as well as you would like inside the box. However, he's a good run and hit backer who plays the run well and will be able to make plays vs. the pass game in the NFL. Looks like a day one starter to me as a 43 backer, either on the weak side or possibly in the middle.

Is he the playmaker at #59?

I would love to get him at 59, but I really think he'll be gone by then.

Lavonte David, LB, Nebrraska

Reminds me a bit of Vilma, TBH, in terms of intelligence and instincts. Would love to add him to the corps, but I think he's borderline available at 59.

Travis Lewis, LB, Oklahoma
Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah State
Ronnell Lewis, DE, Oklahoma

These three I think will/should be available at 59 and would be good picks.

My opinion is Lavonte David will not be there, but I totally agree that linebackers constantly drop in the draft. So if David is there he's the guy I would take. Also for argument sake I believe Travis Lewis could still be there in the 3rd. If he is there is a good chance that he could be BPA. So is there any chance that we go b2b linebackers.

Seriously doubt it, with how the history has been with this front office not drafting LBs high or often. But with Spags coming in it's hard to tell.

Said in the combine thread that I wouldn't want to take a chance with this guy in the second round.

quote:

Ruled academically ineligible sophomore year of high school. Dropped out of school and struggled with off-the-field issues. Spent two years out of football and briefly spent time in juvenile detention center before earning GED in 2007. Grew up in Georgia but decided to get away from temptations when looking at junior colleges. Attempted to walk on at Butler Community College in Kansas but didn't make the team and later enrolled at Mt San Antonio Community College. Played safety for one year them moved to defensive end to take advantage of ability to get to quarterback. De-committed from Tennessee and then Arizona State before settling on West Virginia.

Third maybe, fourth and beyond, definitely, but I doubt he'd still be around past the fourth - someone will take a chance on him by then IMO.

Agreed so hopefully a guy like Cam Johnson DE, Virginia can fall to us and we are able to get Lewis in the 3rd(stretch). Cam's name hasn't come up much but he's also grading out in our range for now.
Option 2 maybe is take David or Lewis in the 2nd and end up with a tweener like Jared Crick DE/DT in the 3rd.

Would love to get David in the third. Would be great value and we'd end up with a very good player, IMO. Don't know anything about Cam Johnson, but would love to get a good value DE in the second and David in the third. That would make me very happy Saturday night.

I've always liked Jared Crick. Only concern is I think he was better at DT in college but is probably a little too small for DT in the big leagues.

they are very strong BPA but need does have a part in the formula

Ellis & Jenkins fit both perfectly

I'm not on prognosticating draft choices by previous trends- say, not much on LBs. It's more back to BPA IMO. In the same regard I wouldn't rule out b2b LBs. The overriding factor has to be their value though. There's still a lot of shakeout to be had with the Combine & Pro Days to really hone the ranges in- especially as far back as #59.

As stands now seems there is some consensus among posters...

Curry- oh yeah but the probability of being around is remote enough to not get too excited at all

David- solid pick that could be around but not highly probable

Lewis- looks like one of the best value/need/availability matches at this point

Wagner- good looking player but may not present enough value to take at #59. Maybe tho

----------------

Post some Cam Johnson stuff, I'll look up some on him later

After reading your scouting reports I think I've lost my interest. Seems to be lacking the tools/skills to be a pass rusher worthy of a second round pick. Also doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a LB in terms of run support and pass coverage. Seems like he would be a good later round pick. He just feels more of a jack of all trades but master of none kind of DE/LB tweener here. Decent at both but good at neither. I'll pass.

Cam Johnson
Height / Weight:6-3 / 270
School:Virginia

Cam Johnson was a star WR and DB in high school, and was highly ranked as a safety and OLB prospect. Johnson was also a double digit scorer in basketball.

Johnson has been a force at DE for the Cavaliers during the past two seasons after initially playing OLB his first two years, including getting some action as a true freshman in 2008. Johnson consistently generated a pass rush, and gave a robust and quality effort against the run. Johnson's stats were 40 tackles, 5 TFLs, 2 sacks and 1 pass defensed in 2009, 53/14/6/4 in 2010, and 30/11/4/1 in 2011.

As an NFL Draft prospect, Johnson is clearly best suited as a 4-3 strong side DE, although he has potential as a 3-4 DE because of superior power. A hard working kid who is relentless on the field, Johnson has a classic NFL DE frame with long arms. Issues with hip stiffness and quickness off the snap raise concerns regarding NFL edge rush ability. Johnson's explosion, power, and ability to close quickly will certainly receive NFL attention, as will the Combine MRIs for old injuries.

Strengths: Tremendous explosion, accelerates low with power. Relentless blindside pursuit, tracks down ball carriers on the other side of the field. Fast in a straight line. Excellent wide and bull rushes when quick off the snap. Strong tackler. Has good power in hands and can anchor, shed, and chase.

Weaknesses: Is slightly high cut and somewhat stiff in the hips, likely too stiff for 3-4 OLB consideration. Doesn't change directions well. Can be late off the snap. Has a history of serious injuries, including knee and pectoral. Needs more pass rush moves beyond wide and bull.

To me, Wagner looks like the better pick.

Doomsday scenario. Loss Porter, Colston, & Nicks.
I didn't even like typing that.

2nd: Nick Toon WR, Rueben Randle WR, Lavonte David LB
3rd: Brandon Washington OG, Dwight Bentley CB, Travis Lewis LB
4th: Billy Winn DE, Jake Bequette DE, Ladarius Green TE
5th: Ron Brooks CB, Tydreke Powell DT

Would very much like to get Ronnie Brooks late in the draft.

Would not like a WR in the second round though. I realize you were taking Colston leaving into account, but I still would rather go D.

Would be nice to have.

Absolutely. But they all grade out in range and are all legit ballplayers. Bentely and Brooks are both legit. More value I think with Brooks in 5th though. Green could be a top 3 TE in this draft.
