I have the Want to do a Bourbon tasting

I'm headed to a camp next month for a week of good times and overzealous consumption of anything and everything. Group size is 5-6. We have done beer tastings and wine tastings, but I thought about changing it up this year and throw in a bourbon tasting. I've had several good bourbons under $50 and would like to stay under that for most of the bottles. Maybe 1 or 2 in the $75-$100 range. Any thoughts on how many we should try per tasting? Any good ones out there that have to be on the list? From my limited experience, I was thinking of Makers 46, Eagle Rare, Four Roses Single Barrel, Woodford Reserve, and Blanton's. Any and all advice is welcomed. TIA.

I've done a few reviews on some tastings in the last month or two. The ones you listed are all good. I've linked those recent threads and the bourbons I tasted in each one. I'd recommend any of those except maybe the Woodford Reserve and Russell's Reserve. All of them except the high end stuff should be $50 or lower. Hope it helps and let me know if you have any specific questions.
High End Stuff
High End Stuff: Jefferson Presidential Select, Pappy Van Winkle 15 year, Pappy Van Winkle 20 year, George T Stagg: JPS would be a good high end one
Bourbon and Bread Pudding Tasting
Bourbon and Bread Pudding: Maker's 46, Jefferson's Reserve, Eagle Rare 10 year, Rock Hill Farms, Blanton's, Russel's 10 year, Black Maple Hill, and Woodford Reserve
Recent Purchases
Recent purchases: Black Maple Hill, Old Smoky Apple Pie Moonshine, Elmer T Lee and Elijah Craig 18 year
ETA: Short thread on Four Roses Single Barrel Four Roses

Wow. Thanks. Maybe do 4-5 per night? I'm thinking a medium priced night then an upper end night the next day.

The numbers don't matter too much. You can have several different whiskeys in one sitting and be able to tell a lot of differences even up to 7+ different ones as long as you space it out some.

You could go that route or try to taste some similar ones to pick out differences in the ages and things like that. A good example would be a line up of Elmer T Lee, Blanton's and Rock Hill Farms. These all start at the Buffalo Trace distillery as mash bill #2 then end up as 3 very different bourbons. Much of it is due to the age, but some may be due to the different oak used in the barrels. Another example would be Buffalo Trace vs. Eagle Rare since both are made with mash bill #1. You could also try some ryes with each other.
Do a little research on each of the whiskeys and find out the characteristic flavors that each should have. When y'all are tasting, you can tell the others which flavors y'all should be tasting and nosing and that will help guide your palate. This helped me a lot in some early tastings.
Another good tip would be to get some proper glasses to taste whiskey. A good example is the Glencairn glass, but any glass with a wider bowl and more narrow top that will help concentrate the aromas will help.

Just don't overdo it, I don't want to be treating any acute alcoholic hepatitis when I go back on wards in a couple days

I like to sip on some good bourbon every now and then but I am not against throwing some George Dickel in a glass with some coke. If a person drank say 2 ounces 3 or 4 times a week. Would that be bad on your liver? I always thought the coke would be worse on you than the alcohol. But I am no doctor. You can bill me at my address on file.

Dickel is highly underrated.
If you can get some Dickel Reserve, it is damn good.
I have enjoyed the Four Roses Single Barrel Reserve before...smooooooth.

I'll need your PayPal information upfront since some people ask you to bill them with no intent to pay, who'd have thought it

It shouldn't be too bad. However, it's difficult to say what your genetics predispose you to. Some folks can drink like fish for their whole lives and never get cirrhosis or even hepatitis. Others only have a couple drinks occasionally and end up with hepatitis and later cirrhosis. Generally 1-2 drinks (glass of wine, 1 12oz beer, 2 oz of liquor, etc) per day are not harmful and in some aspects can even be helpful

Now that is some medical advice I might actually take.
