FMA brotherhood is great. First 10 or so episodes are the same as the other but after that the story changes.

Fooly Cooly - Action/comedy. One of my all time favs, good dub, only 6 eps.

Evangelion - Action/drama/mecha. Can get crazy at times, but it's an all time classic.

Kimi ga Nozomu Ein - Romance/drama, Good story but no action. Sub and dub are very different, I recommend the sub.

Elfen Lied - Action/horror. Good story and great action. Can get pretty violent/gory at times.

Seitokai Yakuindomo - Comedy. Very crude humor, but very funny.

Last Exile - Adventure/steampunk. Great artwork and a solid story.

I tried to pick from different genres. Others you might like:

Bleach/Naruto/One Piece - All are way up there in episodes and have a ton of fillers, but they all have large followings. The dubs, especially Naruto's, are all pretty annoying/bad.

Code Geass
Full Metal Panic
Kenshin
Great Teacher Onizuka
Honey and Clover
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
Durrarara

I watch all the anime in subs, never the dubs.

the following are what I really enjoyed

quote:

Samurai Champloo: very good, cool soundtrack, graffiti, edgy, break dance samurai
Hellsing: all the Hellsings are good, they are making another OAV
Cowboy Bebop: phenomenal story
Trigun: enjoyed the western cowboy take
Akira: where it all starts, the genesis. It is amazing
Ghost in the Shell: pretty damn good, some of the movies aren't as good as the others, and the TV show is pretty solid
Yuyu Hakusho: problematic ending, because the manga ended half assed as well. cool fights, nice human v demons take
Rurouni Kenshin: great samurai series
Darker Than Black: first season is great, doesn't hold up nearly as well as it goes on
Macross: great mech like Evangelion
Ninja Scroll: very dark samurai, wish it was longer, entertaining
Death Note: thrilling, good story
Lupin the Third: nice crime stories and very funny. the original seasons are so old and tough to watch visually though
FMA brotherhood: follows the actual manga storyline, and was redone with better animation
princess mononoke: extremely good film

Some of the above are movies, some tv series, some both. I just took what had been listed through out the thread. Some of the TV series have some pretty worthwhile stand alone movies worth checking out.

As far as anime movies there are a ton of amazing films worth checking out, but that will be for another time.

No mention of Eureka Seven?

I enjoyed it a lot. Pretty trippy story but not hard to follow.

I never watched an anime growing bc I thought they were gay and for nerds. Mainly because dragon ball z was on and it freakin sucked. Sorry to offend some, I'm not hating on any of yall for liking it but it drove me crazy as a kid. A ton of people liked it and whenever I gave it a try I just turned the tv off, went outside and played baseball.

Anyways, about a year ago a few of my buddies talked me in to watching Trigun. BLEW MY MIND. Wow. I loved it. I'm watching Samuri Champloo right now and it's good, but it's not on the same level as Trigun IMO. There's another one on instant I want to watch, it is something like Guren Lagan(???). Has pretty good ratings and sounds interesting.

Yea, this is still a pretty prevalent opinion. I don't really get it though, but to each their own.

Samuri Champloo
One of my favorites. You should also check out Cowboy Bebop.

I've seen a few episodes of it, and I didn't think it was bad. It doesn't really fall into the category of shows I like though.

Yea, I've seen it. I should have clarified in the OP that if it was ever on Toonami or Adult Swim, I've seen it.
quote:

robotech macros
Yea, I think so.

I'll throw another one out there that is very different that I enjoyed. Its called Hell Girl. The first season was the best, but it is a good look at the idea behind revenge and the terrible decisions people make in emotional situations. It probably isn't for everyone, but I liked it.

Yeah I think I just said that because that was the popular opinion so I went with it. I really didn't watch tv when I was younger though.

I really want to watch that. It's not on instant though. I've heard nothing but good things. Fooly Cooly is my buddy's favorite anime of all time. I tried it but just couldn't handle it. I don't know, it was just too much.

I'm starting to noting that anime has a lot of robots. I don't know what's up with that, but that is the only thing that makes me shy away from it.

It really is worth a watch. I have the DVDs, but I doubt you live in Shreveport.

I like FLCL.

It is a lot to handle though. Its only 6 episodes, but it goes way over the top at times. I really liked the style and animation.

That depends. There are a lot of different genres. Just like television shows, you have action, adventure, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, drama, etc. I tend to stick to action, adventure, horror, and sci-fi.

I could give you some titles that are on Netflix that are good that don't involve robots if you want them.

If you liked FLCL, youd probably like Bakemonogatari.

Some good ones listed. I'll start off first by saying Berserk again. Best series I've ever watched, in my opinion, and a movie series remake comes out in Japan beginning of February.

Also, somebody listed Paranoia Agent. I'll second that. Add to that any of the other movies by Satoshi Kon. I haven't seen Paprika though.

Rurouni Kenshin is a great samurai series also.

quote:

Emeraldas and Harlock stuff is good. Looks for Queen Emeraldas and Captain Harlock. Those are really good. Two separate stories that intertwine.

Leiji Matsumoto. Both of the ones you listed and the Galaxy Express 999 as well as Space Battleship Yamato are all his stuff, and I think they all take place in the same universe.

If you are into Daft Punk, Matsumoto is the one that directed the movie made with Discovery as the soundtrack. Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

Bakemonogatari The style and the way its directed is unique. Watch the first episode from the other link I provided, and see if you like it. Nisemonogatari is the sequel to this and is currently running.

Alright. Here is a good list of shows on there that I liked:

High School of the Dead (zombie survival anime, goes way overboard with fanservice)
Claymore
Corpse Princess
Trinity Blood
Hell Girl (may not like this one, not for everybody)
Kaze no Stigma
Darker than Black
Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Canaan
Tokko
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell (movie)

Those are the shows I have seen that are on Netflix. None of them involve robots, except for Ghost in the Shell, but I consider that show different. I don't really do the comedies or fantasy ones. They are pretty much all action, sci-fi, horror, adventure, or a combination of those.

The only other show on there that I have seen that involves robots is Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry. It was alright.
