Old guys, other older fans, 30 years ago tonight Derrick Taylor

made a 35 ft shot at the buzzer to beat Auburn and Charles Barkley. Now, that shot has grown over time to 50 ft, 60 ft,etc but in reality to he took kind of a jump after crossing the timeline with his dribble at let one go. Barkley (who was a freshman and still had his Afro) had just tipped one end to give AU the lead. Sir Charles broke down in tears after Taylor's shot and the student section was all over his case.

Wasn't Derrick Taylor still playing in 1986? Did he play 5 years?

He had to sit out a year due to grade issues(obsession with PAC-MAN). Fact

Thanks. It must have been a good break for LSU basketball, cause I remember him running the point for the 1986 Final Four team!

I was there that night..... It was an electric atmosphere. If I remember right, Roland Barbay was on his official visit and got caught up in the excitement of the crowd and committed that night.

oh,man, the Assembly Center rocked in those days. Hard sellouts and probably close to 90% of the seats filled. If you didn't get in line at least two hours before the gates opened for the student section you might have gotten turned away.

It was the late night 3 card guts, no limit games that caused a few issues with a few of the younger players on that team. Good Broussard Hall memories.

LSU is recruiting his son David, who is a junior in Germany. (Yes, this is Germans)

Euro Prospects.

He is about a 6-3 shooting guard.

Was it PAC-MAN or Donkey Kong? The only reference to this I remember is Al McGuire mentioning it during an LSU-North Carolina game (1984?).

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was not there as a student (was still in high school - I'm not THAT old ) but saw it on TV.

Speaking of Barkley, I remember the student section - which in those days was behind the baseline on one end of the court - waving Dominos pizza boxes at him when he was shooting free throws - an original idea at that time. Charles was a pretty good sport about it and let his play on the court speak for itself. Good times and good basketball in the SEC in those years.

Derrick, Jose, Dennis, Big John(SAM), Neboisha, Terry Belle, and Jim Bowie were regulars to the big games. Many stories and lots of paper money exchanged daily. Just getting to class the next day was the challenge.

Derrick Taylor was one of my favorite Tigers as a kid. If there had been a 3 point line that year, that team would have been ridiculous (86). He was deadly from the top of the key and inspired me as a 12 year old to hone my shot from there.

People forget that 86 team started 14-0, then struggled later in the season before making a tourney run. Anthony Wilson from the baseline, too. Would have been lots of 3s if they had played just a year later.
