Fascinating - thanks for posting! I am still convinced he was a war criminal and don't want a building named after him on campus, but there was so much nuance to everything that was going on then. It's hard to paint everything as simply good or bad.

Point of information: LSU wasn't the only university in the state in 1860. There was also the University of Louisiana.

Yep. It wasn't Tulane yet, but it was already operating.

Every now and then someone points out we don't have anything to honor the first man to lead the university. I want to say it was mentioned in the Reveille when I was in school, but it may have been in one of my history classes. I am not aware of a formal movement to name anything after Sherman.

Some portions of the ROTC (and alums from ROTC) bring this up for debate every year. The building in question is the ROTC building.

There is a small stone plaque with his name on it by a bench near the east side of the tower.....which is about as much recognition he deserves at LSU.

You have to look for it, but it is there....in a campus that prefers to name buildings after Troy Middleton, Kirby Smith, and Thomas Boyd.

The brass canons in front of The ROTC building were donated to LSU by WTS. I'd always heard that was the only mark of his on the campus.

If Sherman deserved recognition on LSU campus, it should have happened years ago. Great article!

They were also two of the, however many, cannons that fired on Ft. Sumter

This is actually true as it was the only example of slavery in the Western Hemisphere where the slave population actually increased and thrived after importation was banned (natural population increase).

One of my old history teachers in high school always alleged that one of the reasons Sherman was so hard on Georgia was that his family was in the textiles business and he was aiming to make sure that the competition was crippled after the war.

I've never bothered to research it enough to see if he was right.

I wish more people realized that this is and has always been the case.

II had read he was hardest on SC, probably because the Civil War started there.

I know it's not a popular opinion in the South, but I think his March to the Sea was a good thing. Destroy your enemy's will and ability to wage war.

Not meant to flame.
