Should we sign 25 if we don't land any of our top OOS guys?

I know we are at 20 now. Do you think we fill up the last 5 slots with Plan B/C types if our top OOS guys don't come here? Or take a few big 'project' types?

That version of backcounting ends this year. Not allowed next year.

No save spots. Even if we can't back count. We still need room to stay under the 85 and be able to sign a full class next year. We don't have many seniors next year.

I still would sign the 25 if you have room under the 85 now. Attrition will take care of itself.

I wouldn't take any slow players. But would gamble on a guy with speed that might be undersized a little

We are officialy at 19, add in Hill and Philips who both seem to be locks as of now. Give me Edwards or Howard and the last 2 or 3 after that won't matter. I know both of them are longshots though.

Edwards, Howard and Kwon Alexander are my dream list. I like our chances with the JUCO receiver, Patterson.

At this point, whether we take a commitment from a QB, whether that be Liggins, Winston or Alford is more and more of a question mark every day. I like Liggins out of that group as we would have to sweat the baseball draft (2nd time in 3 years regarding a QB), particularly for Alford, for the other 2. I also like Liggins as a possible move to another position, should he not work out as QB. Any of those guys would give us the biggest threat to run out of the QB position since Herb Tyler.

We're losing a lot. Need 24 or 25 just to replace what's departed:

1.) QB JJ
2.) QB J Lee
3.) OG Blackwell
4.) TE Peterson
5.) TE Mitch Joseph
6.) TE Alex Russian
7.) FB Stampley
8.) OG T-Bob Hebert
9.) WR R. Randle - NFL
10.) DT Brockers - NFL
11.) CB Claiborne - NFL
12.) DE K. Adams
13.) CB Brooks
14.) LB Baker
15.) LB Hatcher
16.) LB Francios
17.) S B. Taylor
18.) S D. Bryant
19.) Deep Snapper - Joey Crappell
20.) P DJ Howard
21.) OT Greg Shaw
22.) DT Dennis Johnson - probably a walk-on
23.) RB J. Gore - Transfer
24.) LB Randle - Transfer

So, as of now, without anymore offseason "attrition" I show we have 24 scholarships available for next year.

Don't discount randall as a runner. He just happens to have a cannon of an arm too. If he gets a chance you might be surprised at his athletic skills.

Stampley, Crappell and Johnson were not on scholarship this year. If you go to the lsusports.net page, there are 85 guys on the 2011 roster who signed LOI's at one point or another (not including Porter). Those are the scholarship players from last year.

I think Stampley went on scholarship this year.

I could be wrong.

Will Porter be on scholarship starting in the 2012 season--exactly what is his status? I have seen some reports saying he could be a strong candidate to succeed Longergan at center.

Negative. This year it's allowed, but this is the final year. IMO, the SEC will change this, unless the other BCS conferences follow suit. For Florida State to be allowed to sign 30 and SEC schools to only sign 25 in preposterous. Slive must revisit this issue, unless he actually believes the SEC's recent dominance should be slowed.

If he did that means someone else got theirs pulled. Again, excluding Porter, there are 85 players listed on the official 2011 roster who signed LOI's with LSU. It would appear that Alleman, D. Johnson, Stampley, Crappell, Fruge, etc. were not on scholarship this year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the new SEC rule only states that teams may sign no more than 25 per year to a LOI, but says nothing about how many can enroll without signing a LOI. If a kid enrolls early and doesn't sign a LOI, I think he could still count back if there is room under the general NCAA rules. I really don't think the SEC cares about counting guys back, so much as they care about grayshirting guys forward. Could be wrong though, and I've never seen a link to the actual language of the rule.
