Question: are we counting sequels and originals part of the same? Indiana Jones and Star Wars I mean. Will that be one item or can we split them?

I try to enforce grouping them up, but it never works. Sometimes because people just HAVE to split them up.

It's impossible to be consistent because: A) The Massive difference in quality of ESB and RotJ, where you wouldn't want to group them, and Back to the Future, that almost requires grouping.

For instance, for another list, I can't remember the movie, but no one listed the sequel at all, so it was easy to rank the single movie, but when it came to Batman Begins/Dark Knight......It was just easier to group it.

Long story short, do what you want, and I'll figure it out once votes are in.

My money is on either Goonies, or one of the super boring artsy flicks. . .Ghandi, My Left Foot, etc.

Think I'm gonna limit myself to just one Coen Bros movie this time. It's gonna be hard to pick between Raising Arizona and Blood Simple. But I'm leaning towards Arizona due to the fact that I saw that one in the 80s.

I believe I'll be doing this with:

Cronenberg
Coens
Carpenter
Spielberg
Kurosawa

Heck, I could put at least 5 John Carpenter movies on my list, haha.

I think the top spot will be one of two movies. But I won't say so I don't influence anything. But if you remember anything of the older lists....it's really really obvious.

The only difference may be people taking "80's" to mean a lot more to them than say "90's" did, or "Movies we agree don't suck." Nostalgia may reign supreme.

I was gonna wait but I'll just throw my list out there now, too much talking not enough voting.

May or may not change it up later but I think I got a nice balance of 80s nostalgia and 80s favs I acquired at a later date. If you would polled me back in the 80s Beastmaster would have been unanimous number one.

1. Once Upon a Time in America
2. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
3. Blade Runner
4. Body Heat
5. Conan the Barbarian
6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
7. Die Hard
8. The Beastmaster
9. Excalibur
10. The Empire Strikes Back
11. Blow Out
12. Videodrome
13. Repo Man
14. Raising Arizona
15. Paris, Texas
16. A Christmas Story
17. Thief
18. Blue Velvet
19. House of Games
20. First Blood

Yeah it was hard leaving off dozens of nostalgia favorites but like the Helmet song goes 'Killing Hurts, Has To Be Done'

I limit myself to one director, but I might expand to two for Carpenter, Spielberg, and the Coens. I've done my first pass... my list has 80 movies on it right now. And I thought I was being selective.

And I'm grouping the Evil Deads. The one thing that strikes me when trying to come up with a list is that the 80s were good at three kinds of movies -- family comedies/adventures, action movies, and independent genre films. I think it was the high point for the horror genre, for example.

Nice. I'm running at about 50 right now, but I am still adding to it. Haha.

I do have my top 5 worked out I think.

Same, a situation where they belong together.

Agreed

And Science Fiction. THink about it - Cronenberg, Scott and Ridley, boom. And Cameron.

Can we please discount all lists that are missing The Breakfast Club?

Their opinions are obviously invalid.

. . .but seriously.

Looks like my list will carry the torch for all the awesomely bad awesomeness that the 80s gave us.

Some might call my list over the top, but stay tuned...

Because when I turn my hat backwards and flip open my laptop to type my list, it's like a switch...

Your Stallone pic has inspired me to make a change. Took out A Flash of Green and put in First Blood. Felt bad not having any Stallone plus I'm pretty sure nobody will have A Flash of Green on their list but me. This time I'm going for the votes and nostalgia is winning the day!

They drew first blood, not me!

eta: I like seeing the Heathers love. If I were to have an 80s teen comedy on my list that's the one it would be.

I tried to do an all nostalgia list just for fun put apparently people here can't read to well.

I'm actually starting to think this thread would do better by not being stickied. Seems a lot of people just skim right past any sticky thread.
