Stop bashing the city/state and it's NBA fans for lack of attendance

Look, I'm a Hornets fan and I will show up for the games when I can, but this whole concept of guilt-tripping people to consume a terrible product out of some sense of civic obligation is kinda ridiculous and exists only in sports.
How can we fault people who don't want to spend a lot of money to watch a bad product? The Hornets are one of the worst teams in the league and they've spent the last 3 years making every personnel decision to save money at the expense of the quality of the product. Let's not forget how there's always the threat of them leaving the city for greener, more lucrative pastures.
How is it that it is a straight bottom-line business on one side (the team) but on the fan side there's this moral obligation to support the team. It's a flawed concept and we can't keep kicking the city or its fans for not playing along. If you're a die-hard like I am, more power to you. I love the game and I love this team. But, objectively, they haven't done much to earn that love from me or anyone else in and around south Louisiana. If you want to blame someone for the lack of support, blame Shinn and co. No one else is culpable.

Jesus people really overreact to how bad it is. We are fine in attendance

couldn't have said it better myself

I feel like the city and state are partly at fault. There is no buzz around the Hornets at all. When I was in Minnesota, people loved the Twins even though they were in 4 or 5th place in the division. Every bar would have the game on and almost every game was a sellout with 40,000 people. When I go to New Orleans, no one even talks about the Hornets, its hard to find the games on tv in the city and people just don't care. Maybe the two are apples and oranges but I wish there was a little more passion for Hornets basketball here.

EXACTLY.
And that is a problem that most people around here won't admit. People are quick to make up any excuse they can find to blame the team for poor fan support and attendance, but anyone with common sense can see the truth. Louisiana is a football obsessed state and even if you put a winning team on the court, the market in New Orleans is just too small to have solid attendance on a regular basis. The Hornets have put playoff teams on the floor 3 out of the last 4 seasons (07-08, 08-09, 10-11) and other than the 08-09 season the attendance has been pathetic.
But hey! I guess since it was raining in Florida or because it was snowing in Colorado is the reason why we have such poor attendance here in New Orleans! LOL .. the people defending the fan base are running out of excuses. Just admit the truth.

The contract with Cox doesn't help either. If more people could watch, more people would be interested. It sucks to be left out because I prefer Direct TV.

If the twins were such fanatics they wouldn't have been on the retraction block...they had.god.awful attendance for.years

You say "other than 08-09"...attendance was fine in 07-08. Especially as it got late in the season and CP3 was playing like an MVP.
It's always been about a winning product, since most of the people that go to games are casual, fair weather fans or children anyway.
You talk like if we were undefeated with all healthy players, the arena would still be empty.
There's no secret to it. Win and they will come. Simple as that.
Forget all that nonsense about market being too small and being a football state. Hell, the football season'll be over, one way or another, in a month anyway.

If I can get a dozen or so posters to post: "The New Orleans market is a crappy NBA market and will never really support the Hortnet", will that get you to shut the frick up and find something else to do other than bitch and moan about this stuff.
I'm serious as I can be. Please answer this question. What is your purpose on here? What is your goal?
ETA: I've always said the N.O. market has to be cultivated. With solid ownership and an exciting, competitive team, attendance will be solid and profitable. It is primarily football country, but so what? So is Texas, Georgia and Tennessee
If you expect N.O. to ever be a top ten attendance team, then you're smoking dope. But it will do just fine.
I don't know how many NBA arenas you've been to, but I've been to several from L.A. to New York, from Chicago to Atlanta to Miami and others over the years for big games and insignificant games. If you think most teams completely fill their arenas every night, you are mistaken.

I had court side seats no long ago.
I fell asleep during the game.
I'm quite shocked they get more than 500 people to these games.
At another game I attended, the Friday before the LSU-Bama rematch, the loudest part of the evening, and that by a threefold margin, was when they played the LSU pre-game song.
Yes, the NBA is extremely boring and the Hornets are at the most boring end of the boring spectrum in the NBA.
If I had bought season tickets, I'd feel hoodwinked and like it was the worst investment of my life.

So you can promise me that I won't be seeing you at the games this season?

I'll still make it to the occasional game when I'm given free tickets. Club level and floor seats are comfortable and the air is quiet. They make a nice place to take a Friday evening nap before dinner, as I usually leave at halftime when I go.

Well, at least you're helping the turnstile count.

Shut the frick up. I fell asleep during church all the time growing up. And guess what, I don't go anymore. You're choosing to go to the games, get that 'It's so boring, nice to take a nap' bullshite out of here. Jesus Christ you annoy the frick out of me. And I know that's your purpose as a super troll but idgaf.

The difference between church and an NBA game is church gives you the opportunity to witness beauty: in the music, in the words, in the architecture. The NBA, for the most part, lacks beauty. Sure, from time to time, you see a beautiful play; you see a group of people acting in concert, ordered in such a way that the mind is exalted and the senses pleased. For the Hornets, those plays left when Chris Paul left. What we're left with now is clumsiness, a concrete building without any architectural beauty, an annoying announcer whose words have no meaning, and dumb pop music during the interludes of bad basketball. A person who chooses to watch the Hornets over going to a liturgical church service, and I say this from a completely aesthetic position, ignoring the larger metaphysical issues, lacks taste and an appreciation for culture.

Yes, all that is fine and dandy. But don't come in here trolling about how boring and horrible the games are and our team is, when you are the one choosing to go to the game. My point was if something is boring or whatever to me I DONT GO. And I don't troll. I don't go into your bible threads starting shite, so why come in our threads troll guns blazing?
Posted on 1/14/12 at 10:33 am to TulaneLSU
Ok ok. Don't tulanelsu up this thread with your shtick. We get it. Blah blah blah I'm rich and connected but bored by high society. Blah blah blah Jesus blah blah lord baby Jesus blah blah. There, all your bases are covered. Go tend to your unsolicited movie review thread.

Good points. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that I'm disappointing in how boring basketball has become to me. I used to really enjoy the NBA, and when we got a team, I was excited. But that excitement, after seeing what we have now, is gone, and I guess I'm a little sad about it, and perhaps angry as well. Was the NBA ever exciting or was I excited because I was young and didn't know better? I mean, now I get more excited for a game between two of the worst NFL teams than I do for a game between two of the best NBA teams. Perhaps my frustration is with the NBA in general. Whatever happened to it and can what is wrong be fixed?

Nobody else wants the Hornets. So we have them for a while, and they're a good sports filler when football's over. So you might as well be a fan. Plus season tickets are like $300..
