I lurk here more than anywhere, now I need the OB input.

I've decided to go ahead and convert the 870 into a tactical shotgun. What I want is a pistol grib with an adjustable stock and a rail. I want to put a red dot on it similar to the link below. I don't want to go over $250 for the whole package. Are there any good ones to look at?

Thinking of this one

This style red dot

You're looking at 200 for just the pistol grip and stock. You still need to get a forearm to match and that reddot is far from decent.

I've got the standard knox on mine with a weaver rail mounted on the receiver. I've got that same cheap holo sight but will probably replace it with a Burris speed dot.

Yeah, I know. I'm asking for opinions/reviews on brands mostly. That red dot was just an example...not what I want.

I like the Mesa Tactical High Tube adapters. It's just a more streamlined look. Should be cheaper than the one you linked as well.

Mesa tactical makes nice stuff but not cheap. The high tube adapter stocks are well over $200 without a rail.

I'm not sure about the red dot. To me it really isn't needed for a shot gun. I have my 870 tricked out with a Knox( now black hawk) recoil reducing stock which is collapsable. Changed out the forend with a 3 rail version with forward pistol grip, 1 point tactical sling, and a streamlight tac light on the forend.

I believe I spend around $250-260 all together with most of that being on the light and collapsable stock.

If you don't have a light for it I would definately recommend a tac light over a red dot.

this.

I added a tri rail picatinny to my mag tube and mounted a Streamlight polytac using 1" scope rings. With the knox non-recoil reducing stock set, light, tri rail, and weaver base it came out to around $175. i put the holosight on it to play at the range. it's since been removed

I've put my Aimpoint on 3 different shotguns and never left it there.

Just doesn't gain me anything that I can tell.

Knoxx recoil reduction stock is best money I've spent though

If you put the picatanny rails all you have to do is put a streamlight TLR-1 or 2 on the side. You won't even need a pressure switch. Just put a forward grip on the bottom rail next to the light. Your thumb will naturally line up with the rear switch on the tac light. Also with the forward down grip combined with the rear pistol grip and recoil reducing stock you will be able to shoot that thing lightning fast.

scope rings and a decent tac flashlight is half the price but yea your right. forward grips arent the best thing for pump shotguns. the action isnt meant to handle the force that is increased when using a forward grip to pump it.

If you say so. I love mine. I've put a couple hundred rounds through it with no problems.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Everyone always has a different opinion. Once I get it all set up I will look at the tec light option. I will get a red dot because I shoot hogs a lot about 5-25 yards in very low light. It'd be pretty cool to switch out the dot and light when I leave to and from the house.

I think I will try the knoxx recoil suppression with the adjustable stock. I do not want a folding one though.
