I need some help on ideas for buying my Son his first gun. He is 6 now and it will be a birthday present this year when he turns 7. I would like to get him a rifle he can use next year for deer season and can hopefully get his first deer.

They make some good youth model 243s. I'd stay away from the Rossi though. Never heard anything good about them.

I was thinking .243 also and it's probably what I will go with, but I have a couple people tell me I should do a 7mm, do they make youth/junior models in most calibers or just .243, 30/30?

My son turns 1 tomorrow. I've already got him a .22 in the safe as well as an older browning pump with the invector choke system. My older brother has a nice Ruger .243 for him as well. He's pretty well covered, though I thought about buying him his first knife tomorrow and just put it up?

I shot a .243. Killed a lot of deer with it. But not at 7 years old...

Not sure what a 7yo should shoot.. If at all If he doesn't have any gun experience jmo

Eta: does it have to be a rifle at 7yo? what about a 20ga with buck shot? He can use it to hunt other shite too

This.
Why get a single shot when you can get him a bolt action youth model. It would serve him much better down the road if you get him a bolt action IMO.

I'm a believer in the 308. Just my 2 cents. Take him with you & find one he's comfortable with.

He has about as much shooting experience as a 6 year old can have, I guess. He's shot a .22 rifle with open sights several times with my grandfather and I at targets and does well. I want to get him something he can use for deer next year and will last him for years. I bring him hunting with me and he says he wants to try and shoot one next season, and he's got an interest in it, which is great. He will be 7 next season and he's pretty big for his age ( 4'6", 80 lbs at 6) so he's physically big enough to shoot a youth model. The main thing is he is interested and I want to build on that.

This. Do not waste your money on a .243.

O well if you are wanting him to keep it for years and he's shown a lot of interest in it, definitely get him something more than just a Handi Rifle. I was just suggesting that for somebody who has a kid they aren't sure will like the sport.

Just go to a store and look around for a bolt action that you think he would like. You can't go wrong with Remington, Browning, Tikka, Savage, Winchester, any of those in a 243 or 7mm 08.

I killed my first deer at 7 with a 6.5x55 Swedish, which is something people say would kick too hard for a kid that age. What most people fail to realize is stock fit I much more important than caliber. A little weenie kid can handle a .270 with a properly sized stock much better than a linebacker kid can handle a .243 with a stock that I too long.

Most people would say a 20 gauge with high brass shells doesn't kick too hard for their kid, and none of the calibers listed in this thread kick as hard as that does.

I'm a strong advocate of using nothing smaller than .25 caliber for deer hunting, especially for a kid just starting out.
