Marino.
Elway was more mobile, but Marino was the better passer. Elway was good, really good, but I always though he was a little overrated. And he never wins a Super Bowl without T. Davis. Super Bowls are team achievements.

I always thought Marino was a better quarterback.

If any of you Elway lovers are Romo haters you should feel conflicted. Elway was a big improvisor like Romo and Favre. Dan Reeves and Elway had big conflicts over this.
Elway's biggest claim to fame before Terrell Davis and the Super Bowl wins was his number of comeback wins.
Davis' running allowed Elway to settle down and stay within the team's offense more.

Who were the Bronco running backs the other 3 times Elway led them to the Super Bowl? Even without Davis, Elway got to 3 times as many Super Bowls as Marino.

The people screaming about sb wins must think roethlisberger is a better qb than qbs like brees, Manning and Steve young.

John Elway - The any era QB.
He was almost the perfect mold from clay all-around QB - fantastic athlete, great speed, fleet of foot and a gift from God as an arm.
Marino was probably the best pure passer ever with his release but if I'm starting a team from any era to move the ball - it's John Elway.

This is the kind of question where you can tell alot about the person based on their answer... anyone who thinks elway was even in the same class as Marino is borderline retarded. Marino was the superior player in every way. Elway lucked out and hung around long enough to play on a loaded team. his backup in 98, bubby brister actually performed better than him. And SBs are a team accomplishment anyway. Marino's 84 season is still the best all around season by a qb

Marino rushed for 87 yards in his career. Elway ran for 94 at the age of 38 (3407 for the career). Elway did bring another element to the table that Marino couldn't.
Their career records are nearly identical (148-82-1 vs 147-93-0. Marino did have better passing numbers nearly across the board, but he also had 1103 more attempts than Elway. His team relied on his passing attack vs the run, Denver was a more balanced offense. What Elway would have done with an offense like that can't be known, but you can't look at the numbers across the board and say they aren't in the same league, with a slight advantage to Marino.
When it came down to the wire (whether we're talking about playoff runs or late-game drives), Elway is the guy I'd want running the show (probably all-time). There's some 'it' factor I feel falls in his favor.
Again, growing up, I always knew both were great, but I always had a little more respect for Elway.

Dan Marino had impressive stats, but Warren Moon had better stats over his entire career. A QB's job is to make plays on 3rd down and keep drives going. Elway did that better than Marino, and it wasn't close, in games that mattered.

As far as the debate for, "who was the best overall QB ever," I think you can realistically name about 5 or 6 people and have a solid argument. Quarterback is a vastly complex position, and there are so many aspects that go into making greatness.
Now, as far as who the best pure passer ever was, the only guy who even comes close to Dan Marino is Peyton Manning, and he still isn't even that close.
Just as Ron Jaworski said during the telecast last night even after Brees broke the record, "No one...and I mean no one could throw the ball like Dan Marino."

And took a big dump when he got there every time. Elway was not that good in comparison to the other great QBs at the time. You put Marino, Montana, Young, or Moon on those teams and Denver wins the SB hands down every one of those years.
