PS3 Madden 12 trouble connecting online

Got my boy the Madden 12 for Christmas on PS3. He keeps trying to get online to play but it keeps saying EA servers not available try again later. WTF!!! 
I can connect to PSN and my laptops all connect fine to internet and I can log on EA account on laptop but not PS3. Anyone else had this problem before and if so what is the fix? TIA for any help
