A 5 gallon setup from R&R Welding. I seen one of these on this board, and seen one in action at a tailgate once and fell in love! So my GF had one made for me for Christmas.

So since this is my first cast iron, I'm looking for tips or any advice anyone has to offer as far as curing and caring for it to make it last many years.

I fill mine with water and boil hard to get the waxy stuff off. Then clean good, use a brillo pad. Fry some bacon in it. I normally will deep fry a few times in it and then its good to go.

After using it. Wash with hot water or boil water in it. Use paper towels and paddle to get clean. When completely dry and still very hot oil it. I use olive oil because it doesn't get sticky and rancid like crisco. Just use a paper towel to apply a thin film all over and the lid also.

Nice gift

Eta- it will smooth out over time. As you cook and scrape the bottom with the paddle it will be like glass. I have a dozen of all different shapes and sizes and they are all smooth now.

Nice! If it's waxed just use some hot soapy water to get it out. This will be the last time soap touches the pot!

If it's not already cured just put it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes at a time applying a coat of oil inside and out and to the lid each time. Allow it to cool each time you do it. Do this about four times and you should be good. Make sure to turn the pot upside down and put something on the rack below to catch the drippings.

Then fry a bunch of fish or shrimp or chicken.

USE WOODEN UTENSILS

Clean after every use and rub some vegetable oil on it after cleaning. Store it in a cool dry place and leave the lid cracked open to allow air circulation.

Enjoy!

You're going to love it and expect to give out R&R info to people as people constantly want to know where you got it and how much you gave. I have the 15 gal setup but also want to get the 5. Clean as mentioned then to "break in" the pot I had to cook a big batch of cracklins. Enjoy

Thanks guys, your responses were great! I can't wait to fire this thing up.

The guy did put a couple business cards in the pot so I intend to give them out when people ask about it.

Suggestion get the casters and if you get a larger set up have him oversize the burner and also make a ss lid and cut it and install the hinges with the porcelain handle. and enjoy.

I've got a stainless steel lid on mine that he cut in half and put hinges. Instead of having to take a large lid off a 15 gal pot you simply have to grab the porcelain handle and open up half of the lid to serve from and then close. Porcelain handle keeps you from burning your hand or having to use a rag. My lid never comes off when serving food.
