Riverside is playing at one of the top high school tournaments in the country this weekend. Looks like he had a good start. He is playing one of the top teams in the country tonight.

And it seems like Duke has popped up on his list along with NC State. Obviously LSU is getting interest as the local school, Tweety went to Baylor, and he was previously committed to St. John's. I wonder if he is just tossing in Duke as a finalist right now for the increased publicity. Still seems to be LSU's to lose at this point, right?

quote:

"I'm just trying to reassess where I want to go," Gathers said. "I want to look at my options. I just committed too early."

quote:

Gathers, who is 6 feet 7, 260 pounds, noted Baylor, North Carolina State, Duke, LSU and St. John's as the five schools recruiting him the hardest.

quote:

In a 80-73 double-overtime winning effort Friday night, Gathers pounded home a game-high 26 points on 10-of-23 shooting, 1-of-2 from three, and 5-of-6 from the line. He also had 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, three steals and five turnovers.

This may be overstating it a little bit, but I feel like if we can pull in Gathers then Trent Johnson is really starting to turn the corner. I'd start getting pretty optimistic about LSU bball's future.

Is anyone worried about his size? He plays the 4 in HS correct? Would he play 3 or 4 at lsu?

note: I am not worried about his size but I have heard that he is like taz.(undersized PF or a slow sf)

FWIW, I don't buy 260 at all. No one who is 6'6" or 6'7" can weigh that much and look as fit as Gathers.

He definitely seems to be a power forward, but his lack of height limits his ceiling. And that's great news for whichever college he chooses. Hopefully it's LSU or Duke and not St. John's.

I should have gone with the caveat "No one who is 17 and is 6'6"...

Lots of buzz about him possibly getting a Duke offer. There is a premium post on Duke board on Rivals. Dont know it's content.

Yeah, I've been very curious about that development. Rivals seemed to beat Scout to the punch on that news.

I was curious to see who Duke would offer after losing McGary and the Scout info about Parker focusing more on Ohio State. With basically no good bigs besides Kelly returning next year (and Kelly is a guy who plays on the perimeter and can't rebound well), Duke needed to offer an unsigned elite big.

This tournament is a big deal, and it also features the two players in the country with offers from Duke (Muhammad and Parker).

And Gathers fits the bill a lot better than Stokes who was ruled ineligible for his senior year and Bennett who will barely meet NCAA qualifying levels.

Still, seems to be like it's way too late in the game for Duke to start evaluating an elite recruit.

A Duke offer would not be a good development for LSU in my opinion. Hopefully he is more of a backup plan for them.

Damn, Riverside must be one of the elite teams in the country. If I remember the team correctly, Miller Grove is one of the top two teams in Georgia.

ETA: Gathers had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the game while Parker only had 6 boards.

Did it happen in the last 4 or 5 days? The interest in Gathers seemed to come pretty suddenly, and in the immediate aftermath of Parker's waning interest.

I wonder if Wojo was told to start Googling "Insert name of top 100 PF or C recruit + GPA" until he found a decent match

All kidding aside, if Gathers does not come to LSU, I'd love to see him at Duke. Wonder how much he's interested in either side.
