What would you send someone who lost everything in a house fire?

A family member had their house burn to the ground. They lost everything. The family is well covered by insurance; food and housing has already been taken care of.

What could I send them? Any ideas would be appreciated.

It is a family of four: Dad (Army), Wife (Stay-at-home), Daughter (12), and son (8).

Gift cards. One for each member of the family.

A Target gift card would be a nice well rounded idea. Pretty much could get whatever they need there.

Something like this. Maybe a babysitter for the kids too...
If insurance has them covered, just something to make the experience just a little less horrible than it is.

ETA: and not really a gift, but help them get something done when they need it. Like help move stuff, or bring the kids to school, or bring dinner one night, hang pictures, etc etc. Just up the friend factor.

If they had insurance all the household items will be covered under the policy. At this time of year, I would help them find an apartment or offer to do their Christmas shopping for them. Buy them a tree and decorate it for their new apt and make sure the kids have presents under it.

re: What would you send someone who lost everything in a house fire?

When my parents lost everything in a house fire we had lots of people give them VISA gift cards. They really appreciated them and were able to use them to get new clothes, and anything else they needed. We were very touched by strangers that donated who never even knew my family. One day they were at the old house trying to salvage what they could when an older man in a truck pulled up. He lived a few streets over and heard about fire. Gave my Dad $300 in cash and told him he was praying for them.

Also, if you have any furniture you don't need, ask if they want it once they have new housing. I'm sure they would appreciate it. My family got a bunch of furniture for the new place that way.

One of the best things you can do if you are close to the family is collect all the photos you can from friends and family members. Alot of people lose all of their photos. Maybe not so much now with online storage and facebook etc. but back in the day people's photo albums were irreplaceable so wedding, births, holiday etc photos were precious.

That is a great idea madam. My parents were able to salvage some pictures but most of them lost forever. That loss hurts more than losing other things. I only have a handful of pictures from my childhood now.

You can't go wrong with a visa or wal-mart gift card, but I am sure others are giving that as well and they might benefit from something that would allow them to get away from everything they are dealing with for a little while. A gift certificate to a restaurant (casual) or even a basket with different things they could enjoy.

Also, what about something like a DVD player or something for entertainment?
