Nikon Buckmaster I think fits your price range and is a really good scope.

I have heard good things about the new Redfields. They were good a long time ago then got bought out and went to shite. Went out of business now are back and making decent products.

Can't remember which is in that price range, but the Nikon Prostaff and Buckmaster are good scopes.
eta: Also, I was buying some binoculars last week and looked through a number of different brands and have to say I was impressed with Weaver compared to the Nikon and Leupold in that same price range.

Leupold is making them now, but in his price range he should just buy a Leupold Rifleman.

Why 50mm? If you're only going for a 3x9, I just don't see the need for the larger scope. Get a 3-9x40 Leupold VXII. It's on sale at Cabela's right now for $239 I think.

I found a redfield dirt cheap at a wal mart about 5 years ago. Still on my rifle.
Can't remember what it cost, but I think it had to be priced wrong. Was like $40 or something

it lets in more light and creates a better picture in low light, irregardless of the magnification power.
also, it's 3-9 (three to nine) not 3x9 (three by nine). The first is a range and the latter is a dimension.
