This list comes on the heels of Lafayette being named "Best for Food" in Rand McNally's "Best of the Road" competition this summer.

Southern Living names Lafayette a top 10 food city in the South / Online voting for top honor begins Dec. 23 12/15/2011, via THE DAILY ADVERTISER

Southern Living Magazine names Lafayette as one of the top 10 food cities in the South in its January 2012 edition, which was mailed to subscribers this week, according to Gerald Breaux, executive director of the Lafayette Conventions and Visitors Commission.

Breaux said only two Louisiana cities — Lafayette and New Orleans — made the list, which was complied by an editorial board.

college was a lot of fun.

I can still remember it being really cold that day with a shaved head. But, I do like that picture still. Those tiger status around campus are awesome, imho. I have more than one picture of myself with those statues.

and with linking to articles I've written plus the PAWS user name on TD, there isn't much secrecy about who I am

I have never eaten in Lafayette, but it seems to get some pretty high marks across the board as a great food city.

p.s. - I like some of the things you did with The Reveille. Those that came before you recognize and appreciate the ingenuity.

Not surprised, cajun and creole is big bidness now.

Surprised that the Mecca of Monroe/West Monroe/Bastrop wasnt in the top 10?

Thanks. I really appreciate that. It was both easy and fun to be creative and think outside the box at at a college-level newspaper, but now that I'm in the real world and back at the bottom of the totem pole, it's harder to get those types of initiatives going.

Not surprised at all that Nola and Laffy made the top 10 list. Best 2 cities in the state in terms of culture and cuisine.

Baton Rouge is a chain haven and not surprised that it didn't make the list...Plus there aren't really many dishes that are native/authentic to B.R. if that makes sense. Technically Gonzales is known for Jambalaya but Gonzales does not equal B.R.

It made the Top 5 list,,, it was just in a different magazine, one a little bit more "snobbish"..

Sorry if I've offended you?

I'm writing a full article for tomorrow's newspaper, and I'll try to remember to come back and link it here.

hah, fair enough. It's always weird guessing what posters are really like (age, sex, race, etc.) and seeing the result. Even more so when it's someone you've talked to on the phone and dreamed up in your head who they are and then meet them face to face and it's totally different.

Anyhow, I spoke with the editor of Southern Living tonight, and here's a few quick points:
--they're billing it as "The South's 10 Tastiest Towns"
--first year they've done the competition
--tried to avoid the most obvious and assumed food cities in favor of smaller, quality communities (i.e. instead of Atlanta, they picked Decatur Ga.)
--the list isn't ranked, it's simply 10 Southern cities with good food listed in alphabetical order.
--Online voters will pick the No. 1 Tastiest Town in the South, which will be announced in the April edition.
--voting begins Dec. 23

More to come tomorrow.

Yes, I did. Andrew, the owner, has been very helpful, and he's a really nice guy. When my friends from BR come to Laffy, I always make them drink a Canebreak or two.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it. In the world of journalism, it doesn't take but the smallest thing to get a handful of angry emails, but it takes beyond a great thing to get a single nice one.

As for gismap and Count Chocula, I'm sorry we've left a sour taste in your mouth. If there's one message I'd like to convey to you, it's that the Advertiser is on a strong upswing. We've hired a lot of great people during the past year (I've only been there since the end of last December) and there is a strong push to make the paper a community leader.

If you have any suggestions on things you'd like to see in the paper or feedback on what we could improve, I'd love to hear from you. You can contact me at (337) 289-6358 or at npersac@theadvertiser.com ... I'm always open to hearing what readers and residents think.

As for the article in today's paper, as promised (although a bit late) here's the link:
