Two weeks ago I went on my first deer hunt, and didn't see anything (which I'm happy since I have an array of friends who "kill everytime" and "never see deer") I thought I heard one, but I'm still a greenhorn at this point, and everything is a learning experience.
So afterwards, talking about the hunt with some buddies, we get on the subject of number of hunts per deer (in rifle season) or I guess number per killable shots.
The majority's opinion was the following:
A kill every 4-5 hunts is exceptional.
A kill every 12-15 hunts is average.
A kill every 22 hunts is average in some parts of LA.
A kill every 30+ is below, and you need to rethink strategy.
Note that "hunt" here is defined as a 3-5 hour period. i.e. if you are in the stand at 5 a.m. and then leave for lunch, returning at say 2 p.m. until dark. This counts as two hunts.
Also, I did a search, couldn't find anything, if there is already a thread on this, please feel free to link it.

Most likely you need a new area to hunt

if I wanted to I could have a kill ever 3 hunts usually but I dont shoot everything I see

Any average that is not regional would be meaningless.
River Parishes on private land = a kill every hunt.
Kisatchie National Forest = a kill every 3rd life time.

You guys don't try to limit out all 6 a year?

I shoot between 2-3 deer a season when I go hunting often. I hardly ever shoot a doe.

I see deer more times than not.....I am just waiting on a trophy....I could kill more than I do, so with your friends logic I need to re think my strategy.

Me either.
Just because of freezer space or amount you consume?
I guess I'm trying to say, if you think you would eat more venison than 2 deers worth, would you go for more? Or is it a conservation thing?

I'm wondering how many hunts it should take me to kill a deer on a WMA next season.

Depends on what you consider a kill opportunity. If you mean by just seeing a deer that is legal to shoot by state law then its a much lower average.
A shoot opportunity to many is either a doe if they are wanting meat or a buck fitting club regs or personal achievement standards

Past experiences have shown that me that in my household we consume at max 3 deer a year. Now if we could we would eat backstrap every week.

If this was the whole deer then they would have died out long ago.

2 a year for me would be plenty. I would eat more but i put allot of seafood and other meats in the freezer each year so one deer is usually sufficient. If every hunter shot 6 no one would see anything after a couple seasons.

Most of it has to do with the amount of deer a family is willing to consume. I know for us it's 4 so that means me and my dad can only bring home 2 each. Anything after that we keep backstrap and give the rest to friends.

That's not entirely true. People in Clinton drop anything that walks and shoot 5 deer a season on average(from the people I know). They still see deer, and even decent looking bucks.

This would depend if you're going for trophy's or meat.
In the discussion, a lot of the older gentlemen hunters, who have killed many deer, said they let many walk waiting on the trophy. So the deers they let walk would be considered "kill opportunity"
A younger (in the terms of years hunted) hunter who wanted a freezer full would more than likely kill anything legal.
