Anyone else hearing anything on this?

Inserting...no flame, but if true it does seem like something is going on at Bama.

Would be a great job for Smart. A solid program in great shape to build a head coaching resume/experience as well as distance his talents from Saban.

Agree.

I would like to keep him, but it seems like the perfect fit.

Anyway, we shall see.

muschamp has never been the same coach without saban 8 feet away from him wearing the same shirt .. and the same will play out if smart moves on to another gig ..

Southern Miss isn't exactly Florida as a 1st HC job. I agree none of these guys are Saban but that doesn't mean they cannot have success.

grabbing a job like this is a much smarter move than holding out for a huge gig as your first one which may never come or taking a no-win situation in a big conference like Ole Miss.

With Houston and Central Florida leaving C-USA, the conference is set up for Southern Miss to dominate and win every year.

You have cupcakes like Memphis, UAB, Tulane, etc...

Marshall, East Carolina, and Tulsa are the only decent teams left.

I don't see Bama doing the coach in waiting thing with Smart, the best thing Smart can do is go get head coaching experience before you take on the monster job that Bama is. S Miss is that perfect job before you go into the pressure cookers of the SEC. LSU had several in house assistants they could have promoted when Miles was hired and I think LSU made the right decision

i agree it doesn't mean they "cannot" have success. However, Bobby williams, Muschamp, Dooley, and even Jimbo to some degree haven't really set the world a fire.

None of these guys have had any good situations and most have not had time to fix those yet either. All of those guys could be successful at So Miss, just like Smart will be.

Shows me how much faith the majors have lost in the Saban tree. Last year those 2 would have been offered much better jobs.
