A DC-area lawyer quoted in the article says that CP3 wouldn't win but that the league would likely settle any case ASAP because they're already getting enough bad press over this clusterfrick.

If CP wouldn't win, I think Stern would fight to protect the name of the NBA. Not settle and basically admit to it indirectly.

He'd be wasting his time. As for the bad press, I can't really see it getting any worse than what it already is right now. Also once games start, I would think CP3 lawsuit would get moved to the backburner of ESPN news.

I'm a Baton Rouge-based engineer and I've been saying the same thing since they first made that threat. He basically has no grounds whatsoever. I would be surprised if a judge agreed to even hear the case.

Also, would he leave the players' union/NBA to be able to file?

What is he suing for? What are his damages? He is under contract, allowed to play and he is being paid. He was part of a trade and it didn't go through. I don't understand the issue..

well is there is collusion or unfair trade practices in the trade market, he is at risk to lose a $25M or so with his next contract by losing his bird's rights

Has this ever happened before, in any sport? A player suing because he couldn't be traded?

Not his problem as he is not a party to the trade. He is an asset, not a trade partner. Have you ever had a car tell you that you can't trade it into a Honda dealership? "Sorry, you're gonna have to trade me in at Mitsubishi dealership. It sucks for you that they only sell crappy cars."

This is no basis. Nothing keeps him from making his $25M by resigning with his team. This was a CBA that he was personally involved in negotiating. He has no basis for a case.

no

i don't know how many leagues have owned teams in the free agency era, and i don't know how many of those teams had superstar players

i don't think it has happened in the NBA

Collective Bargaining Agreement.....

Sorry, Chrissy Poo. You agreed to it thinking you would still be able to force your way out. Sucks for you.

he may not have a case, but it sure as hell would open up some more bad press for the NBA which I am purely in favor of right now

I never thought we would really look at putting a team on the court full of D-leaguers while trying to court a buyer. This is just nonsense

No, it wouldn't. It would just make Chrissy Poo look like an idiot who wasted his time. He's not even ALLOWED to sue as a member of the NBPA.

Seriously, apply just a little bit of logic before typing.

MLB owned the Expos in the past decade, before moving them to DC to become the Nationals.

Vlad Guerrero and Bartolo Colon were some of the superstars the team had before losing them to free agency or trades because of diktats about payroll making them unable to compete.

The NBA's PR team would make Chris Paul the next Charles Manson if he pursued this action. You think the WWW or CAA group can compete with the NBA's PR team? frick NO

in a normal trade market, nothing prevents the team from trading him and allowing him to keep the birds rights. it's very, very common in the NBA. if collusion is preventing this normal market, he has a claim (well, his union does on his behalf)

Actually, in a normal trade market, the team owner often prevents a team from completing a trade.
