Why do college teams, Georgia Tech for example, stick strictly to running the option offense? Will it ever win a championship? Isn't a championship the ultimate goal of sports? If so, why stick to something that hasn't proven to win championships in today's college game?

Its a system that is easy to recruit to if you are not a top flight team. Dont need 5 stars for it to be effective.

You can win with any offense if you execute and have the defense to back it up.

I'm sure if you gave Georgia Tech Alabama's defense this year, they'd be a championship contender.

Tech's won an ACC championship running its version of the triple option.

BTW, it's Tech's defense, not its offense that's held it back.

In the 90's they had a name for a team like that, it was called Nebraska.

They won the ACC Championship, two years ago with that offense.

See Nebraska, won championships, always competed....then tried to change and failed. Now back to mix option style and winning again. I always thought they didnt give Callahan enough time to get the good receivers he needed for his offense.

What chance does Georgia Tech realistically have of winning a national championship? Army? Navy?

Do you think those teams chances of winning a national title improve with a different offense? Pro style or spread, and then they will start winning championships?

I think those teams run the option to give themselves the best chance to win GAMES with the talent they have. Those teams will likely never compete for national championships; so, they play to be competitive in their realms.

This. It works in the ACC, but it wouldn't in the SEC due to fast LBs and big DTs.

GT has won a NC more recently than UGA , but with the SEC getting all the top recruits I think we need a gimmick to be successful.

I agree that GTs defense/special teams is the primary reason we lose games.

I disagree that it cant work in the SEC. With a QB who is mobile and also a threat to throw the ball, I really dont think the triple option could be stopped.

So basically you need a Mike Vick/RG3 style QB and an Alabama type defense. If ANY team has those 2 things it wont matter what offense they are using, they are winning a natty.

ETA. the triple option is also pretty terrible when playing from behind (see LSU CFA bowl, IOWA in the orange bowl, UGA 2011) but I still blame these losses more on terrible defense and special teams play

If this is the attitude, then why even have a football program?

You can't even think about winning a title if you don't win games, so you do what you can in order to win games first.

As good as any ACC team without benefit of a boost that could come from being VT or FSU.

Although a different team obviously, they did win a share in 1990. IF they go undefeated they have a good a chance as any. If it's the option holding them back, what's the excuse for NCSU, Clemson, Maryland, UVa, etc.?

Hash marks are farther apart in college football. The option works better with that set up.

See Georgia Southern against Alabama. Alabama the best rush defense in college football?

They gave up 300 on the ground against an option offense from D1AA.

Teams aren't used to preparing for it and it produces ball control offense that can win games if executed.
