used to duck hunt an area where I had to drag the pirogue 200 yds or so, did it with a borrowed wooden pirogue and never did it again, way too heavy, get a fiberglass one...u should be able to find a used one in that price range in good condition

I built my own pirogue a few years ago... still use it today for duck hunting, crawfishing, crabbbing and whatever else. I used 1/4 inch plywood from home depot, about $15 a sheet. fiberglassed the entire outside and seams on the inside. Primed and painted it in duck blind green. 14' and weighs about 40 pounds. It can hold about 375 pounds. I sand and repaint each year, but other than that I love it.

The most I've ever put in it was myself, my brother's twin boys (7 years old), my gun, gear and some decoys. The water was about a half inch from coming in the boat

The bottom is not attached but it is laying on the bottom I cut out already. Will be attaching it tonight.

The side boards are supposed to flair out but they don't seem to be doing it. Anyone want to help out?

I don't see in the plans where it says to bevel the bottom of the sides but that would have to happen for the floor to attach like you want (not like you have).

quote:

The compound angles of the stems will cause the sides to bow outward and upward creating a rocker (or bow in the bottom).

I would have thought this would make the sides bend outward but maybe not. I assume the problem you're having has something to do with the length of your bow and stern pieces.

Got it bud. I put some scrap 2x4s in there and made my own flair. I will remove them later.

Tonight I screwed in the ribs, flipped it upside down, and attached the bottom with wood glue and screws.

Now it has the shape it needs on the bottom.

Looks good, are you going to fiberglass the whole thing or just the seams? Also, did you do a butt joint to add those sheets together? Looking at this makes me want to build another pirogue, but bigger this time.

One thing is for sure, make sure to get the edges extremely smooth and rounded for the fiberglass, or you'll have a tough time keeping air bubbles from forming under your fiberglass tape.

I'm not a small guy, so I'll be fiberglassing the entire bottom and all of the seams. Used a butt joint for the side walls and bottom joints with two layers of sheets on both sides.

Taking tonight off for my bday but tomorrow I'll be sanding the bottom flush to the sides and fiberglassing the bottom.

Thanks for the advice.

Looking good! I used a scarf joint. I was worried about how it would hold up, but turns out the joint is stronger than the rest of the plywood

Good luck with the rest of it. Keep posting pics

Didn't do anything new tonight. Just flipped it over and ran a bead of wood glue on the inside.

Put the ribs in and have been fiberglassing for a few days. I've finished the inside seams, the entire bottom, both noses, and just resin on sides. Also added outside rub railes.

I don't care if I ever use resin and fiberglass sheets again. This shite sucks.

Going to sand it down some more tonight. Prob see if she floats tomorrow hopefully.

I was going to say that earlier, but I didn't want to discourage you, haha.

What "weight" fiberglass are you using and where did you get it from?
I know the stuff I used was 6oz (I think) woven tape from West Marine.

Oh yeah, looks good.

Went through way too much sand paper today using a belt sander and a square electrical sander. Going out tomorrow morning to see if she floats.

Well boys, she floats. Took her out this morning for a quick spin and noticed a pin hole leak. Went home and put more glass on it, then took her back this afternoon. This project has been a blast.

I'm an idiot for using fiberglass mats, instead of fiberglass sheets. Would have been much easier. Lesson learned.

Shoot me the demisions of the 2 man if you get it. I'm curious how it stacks up to mine size wise. Mine is 12' 3" long and 26 inches wide. Thanks.
