Anthony Alford, QB on 247 Sports
Posted by Diggerest on 12/7/11 at 9:34 am00
...“Right now I haven’t really focused on [recruiting],” he said. “I’m getting through this week and then I’m narrowing it down.”
Though he doesn’t have a list of finalists, Alford does have a good idea where he wants to visit. He’s already taken one official visit to Nebraska and hopes to add officials to Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and LSU.
Over the course of all of his visits, one factor that will play as big of a role as football is his baseball opportunities. That priority is one that Nebraska took very seriously on his trip to Lincoln.
“At Nebraska, I talked to the baseball and the football coach,” he said. “Coach (Darin) Ernstad and Coach (Bo) Pelini and I talked to the AD and they told me how they were going to do things if I came up there and played baseball and football. They had a schedule made up for me out there and they basically had it all drawn out.”
On the football side of things, Alford is keeping a close eye on offensive philosophy, hoping to find a system similar to the spread that his high school program employed.
“I’m just looking at schools I’m going to be able to fit in at and I’m going to be able to fit in with the offense,” he said. “Schools that are going to be real with me and I can be comfortable with the coaches communication wise and who I can trust. I do want to be in a spread offense, the same offense that I ran in high school.”
While Nebraska was Alford’s only official visit to date, he has already visited LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and LSU for unofficial visits. However, Alford doesn’t differentiate much between the group and is in no hurry to name any favorites.
“All of the trips stood out,” he said. “I like the atmosphere and I like the offense at all of those schools. I’m just going to weigh my options.”

Did the new MLB CBA have hard slotting for payment? I don't quite remember, but I want to say teams have to pay closer to the actual draft position now.

:does not compute:

There's no hard slotting per say, but teams are now limited money wise for the Draft. If you spend over x amount of money, you get penalized and possibly lose your first round pick the next year. Sucks for small market teams like my Pirates who drop bank on the Draft. The days of drafting a top end high school talent that has fallen past the first two round for $1 million + is over.
You'll definately see more two sport athletes choosing college unless they're first round/sandwich round picks.
For instance, If AA is a top 100 talent in the Draft but falls say to the 6th round, a team can't overpay for him and give him first round money to sway him away from his college commitment.

they cant or they will be penalized for it?
quote:
Tax on over-slot signings – 75% tax on up signings up to 5% over recommendation, 75% tax and loss of first round pick for signings from 5.1% to 10% over recommendation, 100% tax and loss of first and second round picks for signing 10.1 to 15% over recommendation, and finally, a 100% tax and loss of two first round picks for signing of greater than 15% over recommendation. These penalties are so severe that they essentially eliminate any benefit a team would get from signing a player for more than the slot recommendation, so they equate to de facto hard slotting. Teams no longer have the ability to spend heavily to convince players who were strongly committed to colleges (or other sports) to forego those options and begin a career as a professional.
Fangraphs
I wouldn't be so sure. With the new rules in place, LSU should start landing some of those big name recruits who would normally leave. This should help us keep Baseball players longer now too so they can increase their stock.

I sure hope LSU passes on this kid. I just don't like the prospect of wasting a scholarship on pro baseball player when we are now in a position to be picky.

If he goes and plays baseball, it won't be a wasted scholarship.
If he makes it to LSU, he'll be a great baseball player here and good football pick up as well.
He's good enough at baseball that football may take the backseat eventually.

and they moved up the signing deadline [by 4-6 weeks?], I believe.
Yep. It's been moved up about a month or so.
The new CBA really will sway more kids who aren't top round picks to college.

Yes but football taking the backseat eventually means backseat when football is counting on him. And if he is playing football that means a football scholarship.

Kid is too good of a talent to pass up on.
If he wants to be a Tiger and play both sports, he'll do so.
Also, with the limited numbers of scholarships available in baseball and the stupid high amount of scholarships in football, giving him a footballs scholarship and not a baseball scholarship is the right move, imo.

Wondering if they can offer him a full ride BASEBALL scholarship (it's early signing period now), then, if he comes, get a football scholarship NEXT year, since he'd red-shirt for football the first year anyway. Just a thought, so we don't tie up one of our few left for this year.

Highly unlikely
Not sure if anyone gets a full ride in baseball anymore with the limitations
It would be wiser to just give him a football scholarship since baseball has something like 11.7 scholarships for 30-35 guys and football has 85 for 85

I know, think Jacoby or Gausman does.

If he is playing football LSU isn't allowed to give him anything other than a football scholarship.
