I don`t deer hunt, and don`t have a rifle. My son is interested in starting, and we are going to a friends deer lease during Christmas break. He rabbit hunts with a 410 crack barrel, and has shot my 12Ga.pump,just to see what it felt like. What would be a good rifle for a beginner deer hunter. Thanks in advance.

.243 or 7mm-08, great deer rounds. I got a .243 and it kicks about like a 20Ga.

You'll probably get a couple of different opinions on this. A lot of people will say that a .243 is the best for young hunters, and there will be others that say the .243 is too small to use ethically. That's the argument I usually see when this question is brought up anyway. I tend to side with the .243 being a little lacking for deer-sized game. If I were you, I would look into the 7mm/08 or the .260. Both have a good bit more power than a .243, but without the kick of a .270 or 30/06.

I would recommend the 7mm-08 or 25-06. Both are great rounds and one that he could hunt with for many years to come.

I have a .260 that I got when I was 10. It's a great gun, and I still use it and haven't tracked a deer past 20 yards in the last 7 or 8 deer that I've shot. I'd still recommend the 7mm-08. My little brother has this caliber and it's great. Better ballistics and can shoot a 140 grain bullet.

I killed a lot of deer with my .243. Never ran more than 100 yards

Eta: it's all ab positioning the shot. Get him on some targets to get him comfortable with it before he shoots at a deer

I still hunt with my 7mm-08 from time to time. Remington used to make an awesome youth model.

7mm-08 without a doubt.

He will be able to hunt with this round the rest of his life.

Doesnt kick at all. Shoots flat as hell and has plent of knockdown power.

Rounds are easier to find than the 260 and 26-06.

The 7mm-08 ammo is more available than 260 or 25-06.

Absolutely. When I think about it, the only guy I know that uses a .260 loads all of his own ammo.

what the hell is a 700 mag. Elephant cannon?!

I'm not a fan of the 243, although there have been a lot of deer killed with one. Shot placement is huge with a 243 and shot placement can be off with a young hunter. Good way to break a young heart is to lose a first deer!

I would go with the 260 or the 7mm-08. I really like both. THe 30-30 is also a great first rifle.

Just as important as caliber is what rifle. I am not a fan of the cheap crack barrel rifles, but they can be appropriate. Do not buy the Rossi, IMHO. My brother has one and neither he or I are happy with it at all. I say, at that age, go buy him a remington 700. He can use it the rest of his life.

i hunt with my son's .243 single shot youth model. i love that gun.

to the original poster, i would go with a .308 remington 700 youth model. get the reduced recoil rounds.

i believe remington makes reduced recoil rounds in .270, .308, and 30-06. might be more calibers but not sure.
