You are in the SEC West now. You absolutely have to be able to play great defense in this conference. Outside of Auburn last year (which still played pretty good defense when it needed to) no one has ever had consistent success in this league with an offense first system. It won't work. And if you want to see an example of hiring an average coach thinking your program is big enough to build him up, see Mike Shula, Mike Dubose, Dooley, Ron Zook. Gene Chizik's in this conference are rare......very rare. The teams that have done well in this conference have hired great coaches and paid them big money....Miles, Saban, Petrino.

Identify a can't miss coach and give them whatever they ask. To win in this league, your coach needs an NFL salary. Don't be afraid to offer Petrino, Bielema, Dantonio, Petersen, or Patterson 3.5 to 4.5 million. This is the most important hire in aTm history and if it is a bad one, you will fall to a MSU/Ole Miss level and struggle to ever come back up for air. You need a big name just to compete and be in the conversation. You need luck and tons of talent to ever win this league.

How do you think Troy Calhoun would fit?

There aren't any mid-major can't miss coaches except Patterson and he has come back to earth this year. Sumlin is getting there.

I am not sure of any rising stars outside of Malzahn in the coordinator ranks that would fit that position.

They need a name coach and a fantastic recruiting staff (Porter, et al) to really make it happen in College Station.

Sumlin with a top flight D-coordinator and some excellent recruiters in Texas could be dangerous.

Not a bad hire if the 1st rate coaches say no. More than anything, I think they need a coach who will demand a really tough football team.

Completely agree

early indications are that Sumlin looks like the #1 choice.

I like this SEC camaraderie!

Huge mistake. Average coach, offense first, winning big with Keenum, 5-7 without him. Briles would be a much better choice if you wanted a Texas guy with an offensive mind.

I agree. Do not want Sumlin. If we hire him I will be extremely disappointed. I am actually hearing that Charlie Strong is inquiring about the position. He was a GA for us in the 80s. I understand he just signed a nice contract with Louisville though so he could be pretty expensive. Who knows, I just hope it is a defense first guy.

i really think you need a coach who emphasizes defense and recruiting in the trenches like miles and saban if you want to win the west.

i question if sumlin can do this.
