Up to 93 cents in the opening few minutes. And that was good enough for me. In at 31 cents, out at 93. Thank you, American Airlines for a great week.

I was about to ask if you sold. I sure would. There doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason why AMR had such a great week but good job nonetheless!

Airlines are a great way to lose a ton of money for the opportunity to make meager returns.

I made a profit off of Republic last year (RJet) before the Frontier purchase had a chance to drag them down. I bought it right after they posted a loss due to one time write-offs related to the merger, and sold it right after the Summer earnings came out. (Summer is typically a boon for airlines, winter they can lose a lot of money due to weather cancellations)

Playing the airlines is betting on the cycle. AMR at .26, if you don't mind holding it for a year + can be a good play. The CH. 11 will allow them to renegotiate their very disadvantagous labor contracts. The key is for them to be able to spin off American Eagle and start replacing their fuel guzzling Super 80s (MD-82/3) which form a large part of their domestic fleet.

Agree with everything you said.

The only good investment from airlines are their Enhanced Equipment Trust Certificate (EETC) bonds. Those at least are collateralized by the airplanes and hangars. Historical 95+% recovery value and they trade that way. Bids for these have actually been slightly higher since the Ch.11 announcement.

Unless you understand the jargon, then it becomes a way to communicate complex or just more broadly unsimplistic information to other people who also understand the jargon. "Net income" might qualify as jargon to a doctor, but its not to anyone in an accounting or finance capacity. They now exactly what I want to say and I know exactly what I'm trying to say.

But broadly speaking it certainly has a nice ring to it.

Genius intuition?

I've seen your posts in the Bible threads, hardly genius material there. Your boy rickyh is also borderline delusional and quite a moron.

Not really interested in long term with airlines. When a company the size of American dips to cents/share, I pounce. I've lost a lot of money doing this in the past, but I've gained a whole lot more. Buy cheap, sell high. Never take that advice glibly.

kfizz, you know you're my Money boy. Let's both put $1,000 in separate day trader accounts. Invest as we will. Three months later, the account that has more money (without any other cash deposits) gets the whole pot, like being within $100 for the Showcase in Price Is Right. You in? Yeah, me neither. But I respect what you have to say because you call out bozos that know nothing and act like they know something like no other. That's probably what Money Talk needs more than anything else. My boy, kfizz.

BTW, if any of you invested had invested $10K in AMR a week ago when the OP made this thread, you'd have over $40K right now. for selling at .93. It's now $1.10 and climbing like a jet in the sky. Get the pun? LOL!

I don't think so. And particularly in the financial world, jargon is often used for efficient shorthand when speed is essential.

Do you know why American dipped that low? Do you know why it's gone up since? Do you know what happened to Delta in the same position?

Not trying to be a dick, curious to see if you actually know.

When did Delta drop to pennies/share? Like I said, I have no clue what I'm doing. I buy big companies when they crash. That's what I do.

Sorry for profiting.

Didn't have the guts to put much in. Stupid risky by my standards. I did more than okay.

In all sincerity, congrats on the trade. However, claiming genius on something now being called the "short of all time" might be a little much.

I think one of the primary purposes of using jargon is signaling - it allows you to quickly demonstrate that you are someone who is "in the know" in a certain field. That's not to say that it isn't often useful shorthand as well. But think about literary criticism jargon for instance. What exactly does "signifying narrative of the Other" mean? Hell if I know, but it's something you have to be able to say to be taken seriously in those circles. Obviously I'm picking on literary criticism because it's an easy target, but there are similar examples in every field.

At this point, I don't need to be careful. I have no dependents and I only put up a small sum of money I made during the October run. I put in for another 5K at 1.07 this afternoon, but I'm nervous about it. If I had a family or depended on that 5K, I would take it out immediately. It is a very high risk stock, but, as we've seen the last week, an even higher reward.

The feeling with this AMR stock is similar to the ticket reserves for the NC Game. If you didn't get in on the fun, what a wild ride Sunday was, at least with Oklahoma State. I purchased a couple of reserves at $80ish a couple of weeks ago (many LSU fans got in at $15 shortly after the ISU loss), and woke Sunday morning to see the price had skyrocketed to $350. By 5 that evening they were going for $25. By 7:15, they were worth $0. I got out when they were $125, but could have lost my entire investment because a reserve has no real value. I see the same thing with the AMR now, but the reward is worth the risk to me at this point in my life.

Thanks for the link and your concern. Like I've said, I have no idea what I'm doing, but I like to think I'm learning a little by reading you older guys who know a lot more than I do.

This is some ride AMR is taking me on. I was down over a grand in the opening four minutes. Now we're rallying back to $1. I think this can call for only one thing: the LSU rally crawfish:

That's also from a Seeking Alpha article, so you should take it with a dome of salt.

No disagreement, but it still serves a purpose and is not simply "saying something because we don't know how to say what we want to say" or whatever.
