Did LSU ever have a JV team that actually played games as a team?

if I remember correctly yes they did in the 70's. A buddy of mine from Ville Platte was on the team.

Yes , cant exactly remember the years, but certainly during the seventies before freshmen played. Seems like they would play about four or five games a year back then.

Gotcha. Reason I asked is my friend's younger brother plays at a small school in Texas and they have a JV team (mostly freshmen) that play Monday night games. Just a way of getting them reps besides practice I guess.

LSU did in fact have a JV team. Last year was 1980/81/82 or something along those lines.

They played most of their games @ Bernie Moore Stadium when there was a turf football field in the infield of the track.

Tiger Band also rehearsed there on gameday mornings in the early 80s.

I was in graduate school in 1969 when we fielded a freshman team - Bert Jones was qb and I think they went undefeated (five game schedule). Played before some decent crowds in Tiger Stadium. One year in the 60s the freshman team traveled to Mexico and beat up on some Mexican college varsity (about 60 - 0 as I recall).

Prior to '71 they did, after that freshmen were allowed to play for four years.

Excuse me changing the subject slightly ...

Back in the days when freshmen could not play on the varsity, LSU had freshman teams.

When Pete Maravich played as a freshman, the place would be packed for the freshman game and then empty out before the varsity game started.

They had a freshman team back when Billy Cannon played as freshmen were not allowed to play. I remember going to Tiger Stadium with my dad and watching the LSU Freshmen vs. Tulane. The stadium was almost full as Cannon ran all over them.

My roommate told me he would go see Pistol Pete play on the freshman team in the Cow Palace. The freshmen team would play before the varsity.

He said the freshmen game would be packed and then everyone would leave before the varsity game.

Yes, back when freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity in any sport. In fact when the Pistol was a freshman, the crowds were overflowing to watch the freshmen play and then leave when the varsity game started. Very odd.

Yes, they used to play on Friday nights. I went to several games when I was in college.

Saw Pistol as a freshman versus USM and Wendell Ladner(who also had a stellar career). I had read about Maravich and his long hair and sagging socks and pointed him out to my buddies(who laughed). He was unbelievable and I was a fan for life.
