I have to chuckle when I hear Arkansas fans proudly claim that their program should now be counted among the "elite" in college football, or when some leathery, gap-toothed artifact of the Ozarks peaks his head out the meth shack long enough to gum some garbled argument about Arkansas being a traditional power. There's absolutely no rational basis for either sentiment. To wit:

In its entire history, Arkansas has won just a single recognized national championship, which they split with Alabama.

Arkansas has no national titles since 1964, nearly half a century ago.

Arkansas has never finished #1 in the AP poll.

Arkansas has not finished in the AP Top 10 since 1982.

In almost twenty years of participation in the league, Arkansas has NEVER won the SEC. Not once.

In the last thirty-two years, Arkansas has won a grand total of two conference championships - both in a conference that no longer even exists.

Arkansas' overall historical winning percentage is in the lower half of the SEC, behind Bama, Tennessee, UGA, LSU, Auburn, and Florida.

Arkansas has appeared in only a single BCS bowl, which it promptly lost to Ohio State.

Overall, Arkansas is a putrid 12-23-3 in bowl games, including an appalling 3-13 in its last sixteen bowl appearances.

Since joining the SEC, Arkansas is 3-8 in its bowl games.

During the last thirty-three years, Arkansas has won just a single marquee "New Year's Day" bowl game - the 2000 Cotton Bowl.

The Hogs' all-time record against SEC foes is 108-133-5. The Razorbacks have winning records against only Ole Miss, MSU, South Carolina, and Vandy.

It sounds like you are trying to convince yourself of something...

Funny the SEC is as tough as its ever been...sitting at #3 playing for a possible BCS Title spot

Not even close. Overall, I don't remember a time when the SEC as a conference was this weak.

I guess I'm only a bit troubled by how much effort you must have put into that.

They've been pretty damn good the last two seasons. That's not elite—yet—but if they manage a string of top 10 seasons over the next 4 years with an SEC championship, then you'd have to say they're in the big leagues. The next 2-3 seasons will tell.

Not that it would be fair, but if it LSU or Bama in the BCSCG, Arkansas will get the Texas Tech treatment like in 2005.

Preachin' to the choir dude. I was just laughing at the op's remark. Arkansas is currently a very good team. BTW, they as yet have not completed a single season in the top ten since joining the SEC. Let's have one before talking about four in a row.

Only Arky fans think you have a shot at the BCS Title. No one outside of the state of Arkansas thinks this is likely or even possible.

How many times have you heard those words come out of the mouth of an Arkansas fan? Granted, the Hogs field a fairly competitive team annually. They limp into a bowl game just about every season, being mainstays in the Cotton, Liberty, and Independence Bowls. But let’s look at some of the facts Woopig fans. You’ve had a winning record in SEC play only three times this century, and seven of the last 20 seasons. You’ve made it to Atlanta to represent the West in the SEC Championship game a whopping three times, being completely ran off the field in two of those three appearances, and losing by 10 in the other. That’s including 2002 when Alabama would’ve gone to Atlanta had they not been banned from post-season play. Lastly, what about the Hogs’ wonderful bowl record of 12-23-3? That pretty much speaks for itself.

Good, yes.

Elite, no.

Elite requires a recent national championship. Arkansas has never won an SEC title.
