take it easy on me please, the last gaming system i bought was a sege geneis....so i'm a bit out of touch with all of this.

my son wants a PS3. several questions i have, and i'd appreciate any assistance.
- does the PS3 come with online capability or is this something extra that needs to be purchased?
- i've noticed the diferent memory sizes, do the games you play get saved automatically, or only games you designate to be saved?
- any other tidbits of info regarding the PS3 would be much appreciated, like additional wires, hookups, etc that is needed/helpful.

TIA.

Can hookup to wired and wireless networks right out of the box. PSN is free.

Some game data is stored on the HDD as well as your game saves. I have an older 80GB model and still have a fair amount of free space, but I don't store any movies or music.

If you have a HD TV, I'd recommend getting an HDMI cable. I'd get that and maybe an extra controller.

Blu Ray player included. Main reason I bought mine originally.

Depending on how old your son is, one of the better "exclusive" franchises in on PS3, Uncharted. New one came out a few weeks ago.

Can stream Netflix on it. Xbox live has the ESPN3 option on it, which I think is pretty huge. Not sure if that will be microsoft exclusive or if the PS3 will get it eventually.

One other +1 I'll give the PS3: when you quit out of a game or movie, and it asks you if you're sure, it defaults to "yes". I love this so much.

That is all

The only ps3 in stores is the slim with 2 different hd sizes. The move is a motion control accessory that you can only use with certain games. Not really worth it.

any new PS3 you buy will be the "slim" version.

Move is a sony's version of the WiiMote. So don't get that version unless you want Move. It is more expensive obviously.

You may see other package deals offering specific games with the PS3, but those are easy to spot.

There are also different PS3 with different hard drive sizes. The 120GB PS3 will be just fine for you. It is the smallest package they offer I believe.

Hdmi cord is a must for hd displays. Buy a couple of blu ray movies while you're at it.

And another beautiful thing about HDMI is that it reduces video AND audio to one cable.

For me this is the biggest plus. Not a huge improvement in picture over component cables, but going from 5 down to one is priceless.

That is one thing that pisses me off about my 360. HDMI wont run video and audio. You gotta have some sort of adapter to split off the audio or run optical. I only have 2 optical inputs on my AV receiver and I want one on my PS3 for movies and one on my satellite. Soooo I must buy a $20 splitter to run stereo audio.

PS3 has a huge advantage here.

if he is just going to use it to play games then you don't need the most expensive system. If he is going to store lots of music and movies then it would be best to splurge.

Is optical audio better than HDMI audio?

I'm wondering why you can't just use HDMI for your PS3 audio and eliminate the optical

Free online which is a big seller for the console IMO.

Memory sizes depends on what you are wanting it for. YOu can put music and videos on it as well as download games straight to the hard drive. If you plan on doing a lot of that then get the bigger one. It is replaceable though.

I'm sure you know it plays Blu Rays so get some movies as well. Enjoy.

PS you will need to get an HDMI cable probably.
