What can a Kindle do besides read books?

Thinking of getting a kindle as a Christmas gift for someone but they would probably only read books occasionally. What else can you read on it, newspapers, magazines, websites? I'm talking about the ereaders, not the new tablet.

There is a wide range of newspapers and magazines available for the Kindle.

LINK

It can do limited duty as a web browser. If you have the 3G model, you don't even need your own 3G account.

It also plays music.

You can also subscribe to your favorite columnists.
My wife likes Michelle Malkin. So, whenever Michelle publishes a column it appears on her Kindle.

One of my favorite uses for my Kindle is as an aggregator of long-form journalism. You set up an account at Instapaper, link it with your Kindle and then anytime you see something long online that you want to read later, you click "read later". Then, every week or so (you actually can determine the interval) Instapaper sends all of you "read later" articles to your Kindle in the form of a single ebook in which each article is a "chapter".

It's great because it's so fast and easy. It also only costs you 15 cents per ebook. Lastly, you can manage all of this digital content by accessing your Amazon account.

I believe you can read blogs and the like, but I never do anything on mine that requires internet (except for downloading books).

Off topic but I'm all over that new Asus Prime. I am a bit wary of a quad core processor that only has a gig of ram available for use, but tablet os =/= pc (or mac) os.

Hmm. I'm going to get a Kindle Fire for my kids to assess the value of tablets (which I am currently still somewhat skeptical of). If I like it, I will probably go for the 10 inch fire with 3G when it comes out in a few months.

The social networking and mobile tech explosion of the last few years has just passed me by. I finally got my first smart phone a few weeks ago.

The newspaper and columnists might make it a worthwhile gift, if it was just the books I'd wonder how much use it'd get. Thanks for all the replies

I'm definitely considering the Kindle Fire. I don't care for 3G, as long as it has wifi. Plus the library and streaming with prime membership does me well. But I am worried about how long I can avoid the smart phones, I really don't want to pay for a data package, but if I have to, I don't want both a smart phone and a pad. I'm going to ride out the flip phones until I have no choice but to pay for 3/4g with the rest of the world. I feel like the only person on Earth who doesn't care for having internet 24/7.

The kindle accesses the internet on amazon's nickel; you don't need your own account. The interface is kludgy but it does work. IMO it's worth the extra bucks for the 3G model.

Isn't it incredible? I just love the fact that I don't have to feel harried to read shite I want to read - one click and I know it will be permanently set up for me to do so at some indeterminate future point.

Make sure to use longreads.com and longform.org in conjunction with Instapaper.

re: What can a Kindle do besides read books?

A little bit off topic, but I want to share the experience I had with amazon's customer service just last week.

I've had my kindle for about nine months and last week I accidentally sat on it. There was a sickening crunching sound and then it kindled no more.

I went to the amazon web site and clicked on "Contact Us", entered my phone number, and within 30 seconds my phone rang with a live person on the other end. I explained my problem to "John" (I think he was in Bangalore) who told me that I was still covered by my one-year warranty. I described the symptoms (omitting the fact that I had sat on it) and he happily told me that it sounded as if it had suffered some physical damage but not to worry because it was covered anyway.

He fed-exed me a replacement and two days later I was back in business. To top it all off, he gave me a link to print out a postage-paid label to use to return the broken one. All in all, I don't think I was on the phone for more than five minutes.

Amazon sure gets my five stars for customer service.

I just did this, I'm struggling to find things I really want to read though. I just got a bunch of Wright Thompson pieces so far.

For those of you who live in East Baton Rouge parish, the library just added the kindle format to their e-book circulating library. I checked out two books this morning and it's really slick. You check the book out at the library site and then amazon.com downloads it to your kindle the same as if you had bought the book from them.

It keeps getting better and better. This is a good thread.
