What was the Bama kicker's field goal efficiency from the 40+ yard range ...

going into the game?
Tell me how this analysis is wrong:

Alabama "lost" 12 points due to "missed field goals."
1 of the 4 was blocked. That one gets no statistical consideration.
Of the other 3, the guy's average is about 33% from that range (I believe). .33 x 9 = 3 points. Bama would have tied us at best (with statistical certainty) had they met their historical benchmark and made 33% of 3 field goals.
Period.
Further, I'd say they don't deserve the full 3 points a hypothetical statistical analysis would give them. LSU's D gets credit for forcing them to kick the long ball in the first place. And with this much on the line, you better believe your kicker has a better chance of underperforming than the opposite.
In both the real world and in some fantasy Bama universe, LSU won/would have won.

Huh?

He's saying that Bama missing the long field goals were not out of the norm, and thus shouldn't be considered as "missed opportunities."

In percentage terms, how many field goals has he made from that range this season? I believe I saw 33%. How can anyone then say Bama should have had another 9-12 points on the board?

Sounds like the so-called experts way of covering their erroneous pick of Bama FTW.

Right. I mean at what point do the pundits begin to discount the range of the field goal?
What if they kicked four 70 yarders? Should have had another 12 points?
Unbelievable. Even Saban is falling for this crap. The Bama kicker is taking the sword here when statistically, you can really only ''blame'' him for missing one. And in a game this big, I think one missed field goal out of 5 is to be expected. So really, there's nothing to blame here. Bama "shouldn't have had" a single additional point.

I'll start with the best rebuttal possible:
If Bama was as dominating as Bama fans think they were, they would have scored TDs, not had to kick FGs. And even if they HAD to kick FGs, they were forced to kick from 40+ yards away.

Bama had only made 1 fg over 40 yds all season...a 45 yarder. The long kicker was the one who kicked it. He was 1/3 on the season before last night. The bama coaches were to blame for trotting those guys out over and over for near 50 Yard field goals. The 44 yd attempt was the only legitimate "opportunity" they missed in the kicking game.

Actually, I watched the entire press conference with Saban and he made the very comment that they should have "done what they needed to do" to score TDs or at least get close enough to avoid kicking a long FG. He acknowledged the LSU defensive effort, albeit mild and unnoticed by the national media. But you know Saban...he doesn't gush.

I watched the same interview. Could have sworn he contributed the loss in part to missed field goals when, realistically speaking, that would be placing blame where blame can't statistically be placed.
I could be wrong, though. I've watched a bunch of post-game pressers today. I could be getting them confused.
