Why can't college football have replay booths on the field?

It's so stupid to have a replay official. Its just one more person that can screw us over. Why can't we have what the NFL has?

If the refs on the field are already on the take then what difference does it make? If we've bought the refs off you should push for more officials, not less. You might as well make it more expensive for us to enact our nefarious plot to keep LSU down.

Personally not a fan of that system. No one likes having to reverse their own decision...I wonder what the rates of seemingly getting the calls right after going to replay are for both systems.

That being said, I think the biggest travesty we have when it comes to officiating is having officials that can and do have ties to programs playing on the field. After all, there's a damn reason when bowl games are played there are neutral conference officials doing the games.

Personally I'd like to see officiating handled either by the NCAA directly or by some type of pool system run by the conferences that would ensure that crews working games have ZERO connections to the teams on the field.

Dare to dream...

if the sec (alabama) refs want to make a bad call, noone knows who they are.
but, you know if it's not slive, it's some alabama alumni.

Only way for Alabama to have a shot at winning against LSU this way. It's completely fair according to the SEC rulebook stored in Birmingham.

Absolutely. Frankly, if it weren't for the REC, I don't think we'd have won a conference game in almost 15 years.

Couldn't agree more. There have to be 45-50 guys in Montana or Idaho who would love to officiate SEC football on weekends in the fall.

Big 12 9 8 10 whatever referees did a fair job during the seson openner against Oregon. Unless you are an alabama fan & know Oregon was cheated.

I'm glad that you are all joking. You have no idea how pathetic and crazy you probably sound to those who aren't in on the joke.

This is a dumb thread

Replay official has multiple angles In a much more conducive environment to getting the call right.

And it's way way way faster and more efficient

Do you know how expensive and time consuming that would be? The reason the SEC officials are all from the southeast is for travel considerations. It is easier (and cheaper) to live in the Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, Jacksonville metro areas and fly/drive to the SEC campuses than it would be to do so from Boise, Cheyenne, Detroit, etc.

Also, as it stands right now in SEC rules, an official cannot be an alumni of either school on the field. What I would like to see happen is that an additional rule be put in place where an official cannot be an alumni of a big rival of either team on the field. Case in point this year - the referee in the Georgia/Tennessee game is a Vandy alum. Go back and look at the number of PI calls that could have been called against UGA and weren't. I'm not saying that the Vandy alum was the reason for that, but if he had not been there it would have taken away any appearance of impropriety.

Actually, it's BETTER to have a replay official and take it out of the hands of the guys who made the initial mistake.

What both college and the NFL SHOULD do is something similar to what they do in rugby. On a close call, the referee signals up to the booth for review, and simply asks, for example, "Did the player touch the ball down in the try zone before or after he went out of bounds?" The replay official reviews the play, usually very quickly, and responds either with, "Yes, you may award the try," or "No, the player hit the flag and was thus out of bounds prior to touching the ball down."

Very simple, clear cut, eliminates the coaches from it, and gets it right. No ref having to run over to the sideline and ask for various angles.

I would just like to see a company with deep pockets create the perfect replay system for football, as a concept system then you could sell the individual products to conferences and the nfl. It would be over the top, I don't know how in this day and age a bad angle could cause a field goal to be called wrong.

replay rules:
college > NFL

In college football every play is reviewed (presumably). It would be way to time consuming and disruptive to have the on-field referees running to a booth between every play.

Do you realize how many millions of dollars are made from a single football game? Surely the conference could afford a few hundred extra dollars to fly in officials that have no ties to the Southeast.

There are hundreds of thousands of fans of each school in the SEC, minus Vandy, who didn't attend the school they route for on Saturdays. Just because a referee didn't attend a certain school doesn't mean he isn't a fan of one of the teams playing. And there isn't really a way to police that, so the best way to minimize the chance of bias is to get officials from outside of the area.

Easier to rig the games that way.
