Any of you masters ever tried making this at home? I'm officially addicted to it and want to give it a shot.

I made some a couple months ago with my Viet buddy in Wyoming...
It's not that difficult. Takes some patience. We didn't go through the trouble of scrubbing the meat to get a clearer broth so it didn't have the same look. But the taste was good.

star anise (whatever that is) & cinnammon are the main seasonings, from what Ive read. Is that what you used?

Also used charred ginger and onions in the broth along with the meat
A little bit of fish sauce as well. And you'll need to add at least a TBSP of sugar to get it to taste like the restaurants do. Some MSG couldn't hurt either if you aren't opposed to that.

I think you need this instead. I think this really is the secret. Still add some things like ginger and onion, but this packet has almost everything you need besides a real good beef broth (ETA: and a fish sauce and the rest of post serving accoutrements).
