The wife and I brought home two lab pups yesterday. One male one female from same litter both 9 weeks. They haven't been given shots of any kind or anything else. Ive never taken my pets to the vet unless it's an emergency. My question is, do I need to give the dogs shots? What kind? What about worming them?

definately get them some heart worm medicine

I have always just gone to my local co-op or feed store and gotten a 8in1 shot and wormer.

I'm no expert on this matter, but as pups worming them is pretty important I believe.
If you don't want to spend money on vets, just go to your local feed store. Most of them carry the vaccines for dogs and you can do it yourself if you're confidant enough to do that.

they need a 5-1. They'll probably try to give you an 8-1, and thats ok. No rabies yet. They need some strongid t, but doubt they sale it at the co-op.
Need to goto vet for first check up. If you cant afford it, why did you get two? its late and im trying to feed a baby, ill check this thread in the morning and talk you through it

I brought my mastiff home at 8 weeks and he had been given his first shots and checked at the vet. I got the 8 in 1 at the feedstore and got him some ivermec and do all of that myself. He just made a year and will be doing a followup just to make sure everything is okay.

Gotta get shots.....
They give shots for Parvo, its EXTREMELY contagious and could kill both pups in a matter of days. This is NOT something you should do yourself, go see a vet ASAP.
There are lots of DIY projects, I have removed dew claws, de wormed, etc. but no way would I try and play a VET, go see one soon.

You definitely need to see a Vet to get this vaccination.

got 3 labs, AMAZING DOGS. ABSOLUTELY get them shots or they could get parvo and die, and get them worm treatment and give them monthly. Take care of these guys like you would a child.

They need an 8 in 1 and monthly worming. All can be purchased and done yourself for much less then going to the doggie doctor.

You dint have see a vet to get parvo vaccines. The only problem with feed store vaccines is you don't know how they've been handled and that can effect potency. The other problem is wormer. Feed store workers usually aren't very good. Ivermectin is great stuff, but made for cattle, so your doses have to very small. .1 ml per 10-20lbs. All your 5-1, 7-1 or 8-1s will have parvo in it.

How many of yall actually do this? I have never been comfortable, or trusted myself, to actually vaccinate/worm my own dogs.
If you do vaccinate your dogs, does that mean you don't take them to the vet for checkups?

I will do my own, but I was a vet tech back in the day, so I know what they need and when. They have to go to the vet for rabies so it's registered and I do the 6 month hwp, so I just let them do it all.

It is actually easy to give the shots yourself. If you do it once you should have no problem doing it. I know some vets will even show you how to do it.

He's been to the vet once as a pup and had the parvo vac and from what I understand the 8in1 is efficient... Also, as for the ivermectin, the one I have is for pigs. I know about the dosage and weight limit, had hunting dogs all my life and never had probs with em

They need a 7 in 1 or 8 in 1 shot. The dewormer I just get it from my vet, it's a yellow liquid, can't remember the name of it. Like some have said, you can do this yourself, I do, but you have to trust where you are getting the vaccines from. They have to be kept cold until given to the dog, I'm in a fortunate situation that my vet sells me the vaccines to give my dogs at his cost. I do take them in for the rabies shot.
After the puppy stage, I give my dogs a yearly 7 in 1, and I give heart guard once a month.
Take your pups to a vet, ask him/her all these questions. It may cost you $100. Money well spent. If you live in the south, you need to have them on some kind of heart worm preventative once they are old enough to start it. Someone mentioned ivermetctrin, but it is labeled as a cattle dewormer. Some people use it, but you need to be very careful with the dosage.

It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it. I change my oil because I know how, not because I can't pay somebody to. Just wondering what exactly I need to vaccinate them with. Some people are saying definitely take them to the vet, which I have no problem with, but if I have access to buying the vaccinations, I can give the pups the shots. Can I purchase everything at a co op?
