Really nice sherburne buck killed on opening day. Just came across this. I bowhunt (when not gun season) a good bit in sherburne and hope I can see one like this one day.

Deer in velvet, does that stuff fall off in the taxidermy process?

Excellent WMA deer.

Yes. The taxidermist usually throws the antlers in a pond or ant pile to remove it.

Pretty sure I've seen mounts still in velvet before. Not sure how it would be accomplished though.

Had a few nice ones in sherburne a few years ago on my camera. Hunted them a bunch but never saw them.

I had one pic at daylight (fuzzy pic) but that was it. Had a ton of them at night.

I shot another nice 8pt right before dark one evening in the 08 season but couldn't find him. Hit him high and a little far back. I think I jumped him walking out and he ran on adrenaline. He was layed up in the grass near the trail I had to go back on. Tracked him the next day and followed his trail for 200 yards then nothing. Found a broken arrow and that was it.

how does this work? just put cameras out and hope noone takes them or the cards? since its public land ive always wondered how everything works with cameras and food plots and such. i've never hunted public land before is why i am asking.

I don't think many people, if any, plant food plots, but lots of people bait.

You just hope you're far enough back to where no one comes across your bait. And hope no one steals your cameras.

so people just go pour a bag of rice bran or something out and climb up in a tree? guess there arent really any permanent stands out there, people just mainly use climbers huh?

I've never seen anyone use bait out there but it does happen. It's highly illegal and I don't think many people do it.

Permanent stands are illegal. I've seen every type of stand on wma's such as ladder stands, climbing stands, ground blinds, and/or lock ons but if I had to guess climbing stands are more common. You can keep your stand out there and even lock it/chain it to a tree. The rule is that your stand must be in a non hunting position. So it can't be setup on a tree. If it's a climber it must be off the tree and if it's a ladder it must be lying on the ground. If it's a lock on the climbing sticks must be off the tree.

What slickback said. I usually try to hide my camera way back in the woods so it's not easliy found. I haven't put my camera on a wma in a few years so I don't know what the rules are now and if you can still do it. I know for some WMA's it isn't allowed.
