Can a conference kick out one of its members?
Posted by Floyd on 10/13/11 at 9:21 am00
I see where members can leave, pretty much whenever they want, but does a conference have the right to kick one of its members out if it feels it is good for the entire conference?

The Big East kicked out Temple. Now they've invited them back.

Besides Temple and the Big East, Marshall had been kicked out of the MAC due to NCAA violations in 1969, a year before the infamous plane crash.

Could they? Yes
Would they? Most likely no, baring the few exceptions(Temple/Marshall)
Should they? Again no.

Yes....VT was kicked out of the Metro conference...mainly spearheaded by Louisville. VT will never let Louisville in any conference it has a say in.
If you are bored:
VT, VCU out of Metro

I would think it depends upon the by-laws of the conference.
I have heard a lot of people say that in the SEC, the only two schools that could be kicked out are Arkansas and USCe - and it would have to be by a 75&+ vote. The 10 "original" SEC teams can only leave on their own. If this is true, I have no idea. I also have a feeling with aTm (and whomever else) coming in there may be a bylaw revision coming as well.

They would never leave, and no SEC school would ever want one of them to leave.

So basically the people who voted them in would have to vote them out. While it makes sense, I doubt this is the truth.

The presidents have more than likely changed, so its the same schools but different guys meeting and voting.
And I don't recall seeing that in the SEC bylaws that one could be voted out.

I think the only place people actually say this is the SECR.

Not sure how it would work, maybe the other poster is correct. However someone did post the by-law a few months back, about charter members couldn't be removed without consent.

Lord this board is full of third graders. Why would the by-laws put different teams on different footings?I don't think arky and USCe would have joined knowing they are the only teams that could be kicked out. The sec didn't win them in a poker game,it was a mutual agreement. This ain't the big 12, the sec is what it is because of equality. Treating teams differently does not end well, see TEXASS!

this tidbit of info. you have picked up is questionable. did you get it from the rant? i'm pretty sure all 12 teams operate under the same set of rules as will a&m and #14.

Just Found This:
3.1 MEMBERSHIP, TERMINATION, SUSPENSION AND DUES
*3.1.1 Number of Members. The number of members of the Conference shall be set by the Chief Executive Officers.
[Revised 5/30/91]
*3.1.2 Granting of Membership. Membership may be granted by invitation of the Conference at a regular or called
meeting. A three-fourths vote of members is required to extend an invitation for membership. [Revised 5/30/91]
*3.1.3 Suspension of Membership. Two-thirds of the membership may vote to suspend a member at any time, either
indefinitely or for a stated period, for any conduct deemed to be incompatible with membership.
*3.1.4 Termination of Membership. Membership may be terminated at a regular meeting, either by resignation or by
action of the Conference through a vote of two-thirds of the members. If termination is voted by the Conference, the
Conference shall determine the effective date of the termination. LINK
SO, it's only a two thirds vote to suspend or terminate a school from membership in the conference. Interesting that it takes a bigger percentage to add than to terminate.
