Keep all of your Tennessee Tailgate/Where to Go Questions Here...

After making the trip 3 times in the past 10 years, I will tell you what I know.
Tailgating is a bit difficult around the stadium. There are steep grades on hills, etc. that make this pretty difficult. The one time we tailgated, we were fortunate enough to set up a tailgate in our hotel parking lot, but space was extremely restricted.
Your best bet is a bar, and there is none better than Calhoun's on the river. It's within walking distance to the stadium. Great Food, Great Scenery overlooking the river with a mountain backdrop, and an awesome tailgate atmosphere. It gets packed, so get there early.
Anybody else who has been, chime in and give your .02.

For a 2:30 game, between 9:30 and 10:00 A.M.
ETA: IF you want a table. If you're cool with standing around and mingling, then get there as late as you want.

Also, if you insist on tailgating and don't want the bar scene, make sure to be on the OPPOSITE side of the stadium from the River and Calhoun's. There's alot more space there.

Calhoun's is a great River Restaurant/Bar. And if the weather is nice, get you a table on the deck! It's definitely worth it. Hands down my favorite tailgate bar for SEC road trips!
Getting a mixed drink at the bar can be a bit of a hassle after 12 Noon when the place really starts to fill up, but if you drink beer, then there's 2 hot arse beer girls on the deck that will take care of you.

I lived in Knoxville for 7 years, and I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on that. Here's what I've said in other threads on this subject. TIFWIW:
I just don't get the infatuation people on this message board have with Calhouns. I lived in Knoxville for 7 years and it's pretty good but not great IMO. Food is average. The view is great and all but that's about it. I guess if your dad is in his 60s and looking for a more relaxed and not as crazy atmosphere, that would make sense though. For anyone else, I don't now why you'd go anywhere else but the bars on the strip. And like someone else said, for Calhouns you better get there early. It's first come, first serve to park there and is pretty cheap relatively speaking. The only thing LSU fans have going for them to park there is that UGA was last weekend and UT fans are expecting to get killed this weekend, so a lot of people might not make the trip from Memphis or other places not right by Knoxville.
Is this like a sub area of Knoxville or something? Where exactly is this place?
Old City is what downtown is. It's like a mile from campus, and no there aren't subs. there is a trolley bus service and cabs, but it's also walkable
We will be getting there Friday and its my first time in Knoxville. This might be a stupid question but what street is the strip?
Cumberland Avenue which is also called Kingston Pike once you're out of campus area. That street runs all the way through the city
Im also going this weekend and looking for people 21-24 to do. Any ideas on college bar type places for friday and saturday night?
Cool Beans, Tin Roof, OCI. There's also Tin Roof West and Roosters off campus that are more for the 21-25 crowd and not as many college aged kids.
If not calhouns where?? This is my first trip to Knox
depends on how old you are and what exactly you're looking for. There's a great steak place called Ye Olde Steak House like 10 minutes from campus down Chapman highway on the other side of the river. It's very affordable and has a $2 bottle fee for liquor and wine. There's also several places on the strip like Copper Cellar, Tin Roof, and OCI. Someone mentioned Ruth Chris but that's extremely expensive for a gameday location. Then there's also Downtown Grill and Brewery on Gay Street downtown.
How is their beer here?
it's good. food is pretty good too. really good set up. i would have gone there more when i was there is downtown wasn't full of hippsters. it's not as much like that on gameday weekends, but i still prefer the strip a lot more being as i'm only 26 and drink prices on the strip aren't as expensive and there are more girls.

Its not the place, its the LSU fan takeover that makes Calhouns awesome. Are you 40?
Posted on 10/11/11 at 9:07 am to Sarge
Who wants to eat a steak before a 230 game??
Posted on 10/11/11 at 9:07 am to Sarge
no I'm 26. 40? If I were 40, I wouldn't be advocating against Calhouns. I've been to Calhouns plenty of times. It's average.

With all due respect sir, Calhouns has been the LSU hangout for games played in Knoxville for a long time.
I'm sure the places you're referring to are awesome, but I was just thinking in terms of the best place to go while being around the most tiger fans.

that was in response to a question regarding restaurants to go to friday. sorry if the post is hard to follow, but there have been 12798 topics on this exact question the last few weeks, and they always get knocked down off page 1
