From this morning's Denver Post:

quote:

Hey, refs, nice call.

quote:

It was nice to see the refs call an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on LSU punter Brad Wing's touchdown on a 52-yard fake punt. I'm sure Florida's return team would've needed intense therapy for Wing's unconscionable, savage display of taunting when he opened up his arms and looked over his shoulder as he ran into the end zone.

Concussions? College football can live with that. But the immeasurable psychological damage unleashed on young players by sideways glances should NOT be tolerated

Any team that let's a punter score on a 65 yard run deserves to be taunted IMO.

That was a weak call. May have had rule-book coverage, but weak!

It was a nice touch that Steve Shaw, the head of SEC officials immediately released a statement that it was the correct call. Funny that they almost NEVER comment on calls, but felt compelled to do so in this case.

Question for Steve: Since there were THREE refs right there that clearly saw the play and only ONE called it, will you be reprimanding the other two?

I'm fairly certain that CBS asked for an interpretation...

I was at the game, so I only saw the comment in the paper. Is this something new like Fox has an ex ref on standby to explain calls, or was this a one off?

I am pretty sure that the rule says that teams will be penalized for egregious taunting.

My question is this, if Wing's taunting was egregious, then what isn't egregious?

Does Lee throwing his hands up after a long TD become egregious now?

Not only that you read the rule, it doesn't have to be the guy with the ball it can be anybody and its a spot foul.

That means you throw a 65 yard bomb, the QB whoops and hollers and they decide to throw a flag, that means they bring the whole fricking play back to the spot of the flag.

The whole rule is retarded. You can't affect games that way. If you want to get on top of taunting, then let the play stand and call a very stiff penalty afterwards. Something more than just a penalty on the kickoff. I am more okay with that than i am calling back TDs. Its the kind of crap that make people question why they let betting on football legal.

Very good point. The call was absurd.

You're right...the whole rule is stupid. Not just in this case, but in it's strange desire to try and legislate behavior that has no effect on the game itself. It's not a rule that helps balance the playing field like all other fouls I can think of. It's designed solely so that fans won't be offended by visible actions of players. It clearly isn't because anyone is worried about across the board behavior of players...does anyone think they're nice to each other VERBALLY during games? Of course not! But since we don;t have every players mic'ed up so that everything they say can be heard by everyone watching on TV and in the stands, we can all pretend they play nice with each other.

The whole thing is beyond absurd.

If you are capable of being taunted by a punter, then maybe you need rules like this to protect your candy arse.

Another dumb part of this rule is that say the guy doesn't "taunt" before scoring - he can then throw the ball at the opponent's face, do back handsprings in the endzone, dance like Travolta from Saturday Night Fever, grab a cheerleader and make out with her, and only get penalized 15 yards on the PAT or kickoff and the TD still stands.
