I only compared them to the Red Sox since I'm sure they would be second in MLB payroll in the last ten years. They have outspent the Red Sox by $574 million since 2002.

After all that, they couldn't afford a convertible roof on their new stadium. Flock the Yankmees.

I guarantee over half of the teams total payroll isn't even $574 million for 10 years.

I guarantee you are wrong.

In 2001, the Giants were 15th in payroll and spent a little over $63 million. 2001 MLB Payrolls

In 2011, the Braves were 15th in payroll and spent a little over $87 million. 2011 MLB Payrolls

Goes to show you how much of a crapshoot the MLB playoffs are.

I'd love for someone to graph each teams salary of the last 10-15 years. Any takers?

Yankees have really squandered an extraordinary advantage by spending so poorly so often over the last ten years IMO

There doesn't seem to be enough emphasis on getting value for the money spent and the typical offseason involves just throwing money at whatever free agent the fans are screaming about this year.

That ends up being not a very good way to run a franchise tho - you end up with a lot of aging sluggers with high name recognition instead of a more balanced team

I like what the Phillies have done more recently a lot more

I like it, but they are trading a good bit away in the farm. That's going to bite them in the arse down the line, just like it did with NY. I couldn't care less about how a team spends their money, but if people want to gripe about rising payrolls then look at Phillie. They've grown theirs a ton. 3.5X higher than it was in 2000 and almost 2X what it was in 2006.

As long as they make money I'm sure they are happy.

and that one is still more than most teams have won in the last decade.
the spending by no means guarantees a world series, but their odds of getting there are far better than everyone else. they are likely going to be one of the few still playing when october rolls around.

Exactly. Spending doesn't always equal success.

The top 4 AL teams in payroll:
Yankees - Made it.
Red Sox - nope. Made it 6 times last 11 seasons.
Angels - nada (they spend less than NY obviously but holy shite they make terrible decisions)
White Sox - zilch

Top 4 NL:
Phillies - Yup
Cubs -
Mets - Negative. Twice since 1999.
Giants - At home. WS last year though.

The Yankees need a makeover this off-season.

They need a couple little tweaks here and there. I don't see anyone we can move though. Nobody is going to take AJ, I don't see a comparable upgrade for Swisher, and SP is tough to come by. I think we do what we did in 2008 and this year. Don't make any big changes, let some bad deals come off the books, and make some moves in the 2012 offseason. Should be a pretty solid FA class

They could make a play for Matt Kemp or Kershaw...
