Is it me or do RB's drop the ball way too early

Just watching fla bama and today vs UK it seems RB's let go of the ball way too early. I've noticed this the past few yrs. Perhaps the movie "The Program" and my h.s. Coach taught me u hand the ball to the ref. Too many times I see guys flip the ball or let it go too soon.
