Why Doesn't LSU claim the 1908 National Title? I've seen it written before that we won the title that year, but no mention from LSU. If Notre Dame gets to claim all those titles from back in the day, why don't we?

I don't think either of the two major polls were around back then. We don't claim titles that aren't from one of the two major polls (Alabama).

Doc Fenton will be around soon to lay out the details, but I believe that Auburn leveled charges that we were using professional players (after we beat them). LSU just decided to say, "Fuk it."

LSU doesn't have the sort of inferiority complex that leads us to dig and scrounge around for slivers and scraps of laurels to wave around.

BTW, did you realize that Alabama only has 4 legitimate national championships?

I claim it! Just most people don't know about those old games back then.

I don't know the answer. I have a Sports Almanac that lists Penn as the National Chamption for 1908. There was no AP back then. LSU was named national champion by one authority. LSU won ten games; Penn won 11.

I was just fooling around on wikipedia, and I read the article on the Tide's championships. All of them before WWII were just added in the 1980s to make them look better. I'm glad we never pulled any shite like that.

There were several other NC's we could claim following that one, but we are not Bama. We only claim the legitimate ones. 1935 and 1936 come to mind.

Oh, it gets worse than that. Can you imagine how sad it is for someone to go running and jumping around, screaming that they're kickass national champs... AFTER they've gotten their assez kicked in their bowl game?

That's Alabama... multiple times.

1. Because we played nobodies and everyone knew it.
2. Because there was too much drama surrounding pay for play.

So we will be going for our 5th National Championship this season.

Look at 1935, 1936 and 1962.

If we were Bama or Ole Miss, we would be claiming those, along with 1908.

No joke.

Thats a great article. That guy really did some research. Makes you wonder why NCAA football has always had the worst schemes for crowning a champ.

Writing the book on the 1908 team, so here is what it comes down too:

A check for around 10.61 made out to Martin Lally, which he endosed to a friend to replace him to sing at a local thearter.

No player on the 1908 was paid to play, and the facts back that up.

Tulane is the cause of the more than 10 charges against LSU at the time, form players playing under different names to players not going to class.

Not one of the Tulane charges against the 08 team were proven true.

In 1907 we did have a player playing under a different name, there will be a whole chapter on that case.

The book will cover 1905 until the rematch with Tulane in 1911.

Know this much, Doc Fenton was the best overall player in college football in 1908 and the LSU backfield was very likely the best in college football.

The enemies in this story are Grantland Rice, Tulane, and Auburn in the end.

The wronged are Wingard, LSU and Lally.
